Career Tales: Moving between sectors

Practical Tips for Equality, Diversity and InclusionThursday 7 November 2024, 12.30pm - 1.30pmDelivered via Zoom How inclusive is your library?
Ensuring that your library is a welcoming, inclusive and diverse organisation is a continual journey, and no matter where we are on that journey there are always more things to learn from others experiences and viewpoints.
Even after working on EDI projects for most of her working life, Beth has found that delving into the breadth of projects and experiences explored in her new book has been an eye-opening experience.
Here, Beth will discuss some of the ways we can all be looking at our libraries with fresh, EDI-focused eyes, finding practical ways that we can use to improve experiences for everyone, even when addressing the bigger picture may feel out of our grasp. There will be time at the end of the session for a Q&A so that you can put your questions forward to Beth.

Dr Beth Montague-Hellen, Head of Library & Information Services Francis Crick Institute
Beth moved into libraries after a career as an evolutionary biologist, seeing than she could have a far greater impact by supporting others than by continuing as a researcher herself. Beth retrained at the University of Sheffield Information School and is currently Head of Library and Information Services at the Francis Crick Institute.
Beth has a wealth of experience working in equality, diversity and inclusion projects and campaigns. In 2020 Beth jointly won the Royal Society Athena Prize for setting up the LGBTQ+ STEMinar, a conference designed to give a space where researchers in the STEM fields can discuss and present their research in a supporting atmosphere. Beth has also previously been shortlisted for the Gay Times Barbara Burford Award for Excellence in STEM. Beth is the Chair of the CILIP LGBTQ+ Network and has previously volunteered as Diversity and Inclusions Officer for the Yorkshire and Humberside Members' Network.
