Allies and conspirators, by and for LGBTQ+ Library Staff

Monday 14 October 2024, 12.30pm - 1.30pm

Delivered via Zoom

With the increase in calls for censorship for LGBTQ+ books and continued attacks on trans members of our community, LGBTQ+ folks need allies. But, we also need to make sure that we are being allies to those who are discriminated against because of other identities or characteristics. This workshop will explore way to practically stand up for others, becoming a practical ally and co-conspirator.

This session will:

>> Consider the difference between a passive ally, an active ally and a co-conspirator
>> Explore ways that those outside of our own experience might need support
>> Identify concrete ally and co-conspirator actions that we can commit to

Speakers:

Dr Beth Montague-Hellen,
Head of Library & Information Services
Francis Crick Institute

Beth moved into libraries after a career as an evolutionary biologist, seeing than she could have a far greater impact by supporting others than by continuing as a researcher herself. Beth retrained at the University of Sheffield Information School and is currently Head of Library and Information Services at the Francis Crick Institute.

Beth has a wealth of experience working in equality, diversity and inclusion projects and campaigns. In 2020 Beth jointly won the Royal Society Athena Prize for setting up the LGBTQ+ STEMinar, a conference designed to give a space where researchers in the STEM fields can discuss and present their research in a supporting atmosphere. Beth has also previously been shortlisted for the Gay Times Barbara Burford Award for Excellence in STEM. Beth is the Chair of the CILIP LGBTQ+ Network and has previously volunteered as Diversity and Inclusions Officer for the Yorkshire and Humberside Members' Network.

Get to know the incredible CILIP Communities - our volunteer networks who meet regularly to programme events, trainings and conferences and publish journals, blogs and newsletters. Any CILIP member can join our community groups, attend events and/or get involved with the committee and help shape the future of their work...

The LGBTQ+ Network was formed out of the need for a group to represent all UK LGBTQ+ Library, Knowledge & Information workers, as there hasn't been a formal organisation focused on this since around 2000. The Network, which is a CILIP supported group rather than a Member Network, will create a community which can work with CILIP to include the specific development needs and the perspective of LGBTQ+ Library Knowledge & Information workers; and aims to provide guidance, support, and a safe space to share knowledge and experiences for library, information and knowledge workers who identify as LGBTQ+. The LGBTQ+ Network, which will belong to its members, is free to join and open to all library, information and knowledge workers who identify as LGBTQ+, both CILIP members and non-members.
