Career Tales: Moving between sectors

Information Literacy in Public and Health libraries

Thursday 17 October 2024, 12.30pm - 2.00pm

Delivered via Zoom

Information Literacy is defined by CILIP as "the ability to think critically and make balanced judgements about any information we find and use. It empowers us as citizens to develop informed views and to engage fully with society”. Put this way, it is clear that information literacy is or should be central to the work of all librarians, in every sector. However, IL work is typically most visible in educational sectors, particularly higher education.

This event aims to shine a spotlight on information literacy in non-educational sectors. Speakers will discuss information literacy in two settings: public libraries, and health libraries. Drew Feeney, Project Engagement Officer / Librarian at North Lanarkshire Council and PhD researcher at Edinburgh Napier University, will discuss how public librarians can turn implicit knowledge of information literacy into explicit practice, and better understand this process to advocate more effectively in turn for libraries themselves. Katie Wise, Library & Knowledge Specialist at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, will discuss how health librarians develop information literacy, from raising awareness of health literacy, supporting students and teaching evidence-based practice to encourage better clinical and non-clinical practice, and how the evolution of technology impacts how we find and understand health information.

This session will:

>> Consider information literacy practice in different library sectors
>>
Encourage attendees to reflect on information literacy in their own sector/workplace
>>
Support colleagues to apply cross-sectoral understanding of information literacy to their own practice
