Cataloguing with Confidence

29th October 2024 @10am until 16:30

The Metadata and Discovery Group hosted by the Mercian Colloaboration are please to offer a cataloguing workshop at De Montfort University, Leicester.

The workshop is aimed at those with a basic knowledge or some prior experience of cataloguing, who want to develop their knowledge of RDA, AACR2, MARC fields and practical cataloguing in general. It is ideal for paraprofessionals and those new the profession or those with some oversight of cataloguing but who are not trained cataloguers. This session will provide attendees with the necessary resources and rules to catalogue books confidently in their workplace.

Learning outcomes

Attendees will learn about the theory underpinning current cataloguing standards (AACR2, MARC21, RDA) and gain practical knowledge in cataloguing. The focus will be on developing your cataloguing skills with practical, hands-on sessions using hard copy print books.

Presenters

Victoria Parkinson, Library Solutions Manager, Systems, Space and Discovery, King’s College London

Tom Meehan, Head of Cataloguing and Metadata, UCL

Programme

In the morning, Victoria and Thomas will provide an overview of current cataloguing standards and their history and principles along with an introduction to the main fields used in cataloguing books. In the afternoon, attendees will put this into practice using real examples under the guidence of experienced cataloguers.
