Presenters: Ioana Mitea (Subject Liaison Librarian) and Simbo Ajayi (Head of Peer-Assisted Learning)
Research was undertaken to explore the Middlesex University (Hendon Campus) SLAs’ insights of the students’ use of AI tools in their assignments (insights derived from SLAs’ practice and experience with supporting students). The focus was to capture the SLAs’ perceptions and experiences and the spectrum of the students’ approaches to using AI tools in their assignments. The objectives were to understand:
- Students using AI tools in assignments, perceived advantages, disadvantages and usefulness. - Perceived trust and confidence in using AI tools. - Awareness of and complying to Middlesex University’s rules / guidelines regarding the use of AI tools in assignments (especially acknowledging the use). - Perceived need for help and support from Library and LET (Learning Enhancement Team).
The research hopes to increase the current understanding of the experiences and perceptions of Middlesex University’s students’ use of AI tools in their assignments, clarity of University rules and guidance, as well as the perceived need for help and support from the Library and LET teams. This can help inform decision making regarding the guidance and support they put in place for their students.
Ioana and Simbo will talk about the research and there will hopefully be the opportunity for attendees to discuss their experiences of AI tools at their institutions.
