Cataloguing with Confidence

Thursday 24th April, 10:00 - 16:30 (Registration from 09:30)

CILIP Metadata and Discovery Group, and Academic Libraries North are pleased to offer a Cataloguing with Confidence workshop at the University of Manchester. This workshop mirrors one presented by Victoria Parkinson and Tom Meehan at De Montfort University, Leicester in October 2024.

The workshop is aimed at those with a basic knowledge or some prior experience of cataloguing, who want to develop their knowledge of RDA, AACR2 & MARC fields, and gain some experience of practical cataloguing. It is ideal for paraprofessionals and those new to the profession, or those with some oversight of cataloguing but who are not trained cataloguers. This session will provide attendees with the necessary resources and rules to catalogue print books confidently in their workplace.

Learning outcomes

Attendees will learn about the theory underpinning current cataloguing standards (AACR2, MARC21, RDA) and gain practical knowledge in cataloguing. The focus will be on developing your cataloguing skills with practical, hands-on sessions using hard-copy print books.

Presenters

Will Peaden, Head of Content & Discovery, Lanchester Library, Coventry University

Emma Booth, Metadata Manager for Content Management, University of Manchester Library

Using materials created by Victoria Parkinson (King’s College London) and Tom Meehan (UCL).

Programme

In the morning, Will and Emma will provide an overview of current cataloguing standards and their history and principles along with an introduction to the MARC fields used in cataloguing books. In the afternoon, attendees will put this into practice using real examples under the guidance of experienced cataloguers. The day will focus on cataloguing print books but the principles will be useful when dealing with any materials.
