Libraries at Risk: Day of Action 28th October 2024
CILIP CEO, Louis Coiffait-Gunn has written an urgent appeal to every Councillor, MP, and Metro Mayor in 19 councils across England and Wales, where local authority budget reductions could threaten their public libraries with closure or a reduction
in service provision.
The letters act as a reminder of the incredible importance and value of library services and how they provide a return on investment both financially and by contributing to a variety of agendas for social good.

Libraries at Risk
Earlier this year, CILIP set up the Public Libraries at Risk Monitor to provide a live resource for the library sector, and the public, to record and keep track of any changes
across the UK.
As part of the campaign, CILIP published its Public Libraries – Know your Rights Guide to help local decision-makers and library supporters understand the protections in
place for library services, and contact their local authorities to add their voices to the call to save public libraries.
It also advises how to raise appeals about decisions to the Libraries Minister under their superintendence duties.
Support the Campaign
You can support the campaign by writing to your local Councillor and MP. We created Know Your Rights as a step-by-step guide to contacting your council members directly.
The more they hear from us about how libraries changes lives for the better, the louder our voices become.
Letters
In addition to the 19 councils that CILIP has contacted on 28 October 2024, as part of the Libraries at Risk campaign, we contacted 13 other councils earlier this year where library services were facing cuts and closure.
