Overseas anyone?

Posted By Pamela Shaw, 10 May 2022
Just wondering if anyone is still reading this CILIP overseas blog. I would be interested in seeing what everyone is up to in the world of libraries. I am currently in Sydney but I am from the UK. Would love to share ideas, differences, and other interesting facts from our libraries around the world.

Hello! I am in the U.S. and looking to move to the UK. Our library systems seem to be more social work than other countries that I've noticed. Do you feel that you do much social work (housing people experiencing homelessness, helping with mental health crises, administering drug overdose treatments) in Sydney or the UK?

Don't tend to see it much in school libraries, but we do have student welfare as part of our system and that can range from giving them a quiet space to contemplate in or providing a laptop for them as the family can't afford to buy one.  So yes, just not providing books, but also looking after their welfare needs too.

Hello! Like Audrey, I am also in the US and hoping to relocate to the UK. I work in academic libraries, currently in the health sciences.

Hello! I work in academic libraries too (University Librarian at the University of Gibraltar). I've been here just over four years now. My background prior to that was working in the UK (for a few decades), mainly in special libraries, particularly plant science and medicine.

Hi Caroline, Plant science sounds interesting. Where did you do this work? Which library?

Hi everyone, I'm from France! I work in academic libraries, more specifically health sciences - like Sarah - as well as political sciences. I'm currently trying to figure out how to improve my skills and become moer eligible for a positionin the UK.
