CILIP’s first Chinese Masters accreditation at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou

The three library, information and archives academic Masters programmes from the School of Information Management at Sun Yat-sen University in South China have been accredited by CILIP.

The Master of Science programmes in Library Science, Information Science and Archival Science are CILIP’s first Chinese postgraduate accredited programmes recognising that they provide solid preparation for professional practice and a suitable base for anybody entering the library, information and archive professions.

Helen Berry, CILIP’s Workforce Development Manager said “We were delighted to be invited back to Sun Yat-Sen University to accredit the first ever postgraduate programmes taught in Mandarin. Our expanding overseas family offers quality assurance for learners pursuing careers in the wide range of information and knowledge fields.”

Independent assessor, Dr Carolynn Rankin, commented on how the programmes are successfully delivered as part of a wider university framework of student development which provides an excellent pathway of opportunities for students who wish to continue expanding their expertise and experiences in the information field. Dean and Professor in Information Management, Professor Miguel Nunes said “I would like to state how pleased and proud we are that our courses are recognised at a level that is similar and compatible with those in the UK and internationally”.

It is ranked number four in the country and is the premier location for talent development in South China. With over 1,000 students in the faculty, it is the largest CILIP accredited postgraduate learning provider.

CILIP’s learning provider accreditation is designed to help students choose library, information and archive career programmes that cover the essential skills and knowledge, and have been rigorously assessed. Programmes are assessed using the CILIP Professional Knowledge and Skills Base which identifies the core knowledge and skills of the profession. The PKSB is a flexible and practical tool which has been designed to be straight forward and comprehensive in order to capture the many different types of skills and knowledge that are expected of a modern information professional
