CILIP Statement on UCU Strike Action

The Board of Trustees at CILIP, the UK Library and Information Association would like to send our solidarity to the library and information workers involved in the current strike action organised by the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) over pay and conditions in Universities.

We recognise that Universities are operating in a globally-competitive environment under challenging funding conditions. This is why we have lent our support to calls for fair funding for Higher Education Institutions in our recent ‘Manifesto for Libraries'.

However, on behalf of library and information workers in HE we are concerned about the workforce issues that this strike has highlighted, specifically:

  • The downgrading of pay over the past decade, particularly for junior and professional services roles;
  • The apparent gender and ethnic pay gap;
  • The increased use of casual and fixed-term contracts;
  • A significant increase in workload as a result of staffing reductions

These issues are of general concern to the wider library and information profession, which is why CILIP has developed an Employer Partner Scheme to help employers develop an effective information workforce.

Nobody wants to obstruct the provision of quality education to students, and we understand that those involved in the strike action do so as a matter of last resort. We hope that all parties come together in order to reach a mutually-acceptable resolution as quickly as possible.
