The Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals are pleased to announce that Browns Books for Students will be the official book supplier for CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals Shadowing scheme from 2014.
Each year over 90,000 children in over 4,700 reading groups ‘shadow’ the country’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards. In libraries and classrooms across the country and overseas they follow the awards judging process. Young people engage with outstanding writing and illustration by writing reviews, uploading videos, discussing the books and deciding who they think should win. In 2013 over 16,700 book reviews were posted on the website.
Browns Books for Students have been selected to be the official book supplier for the next three years following a competitive tender process. They will provide shadowing groups with a 20% discount on the shortlisted books and one year’s free subscription to their eBook platform, VLeBooks. Additionally, shadowing groups can get a further 20% credit on the net value of shortlist orders to spend on eBooks.
Yvette Stafford, Managing Director of Browns Books for Students, commented “We are committed to encouraging reading for pleasure, supporting schools and libraries in a challenging environment and we are absolutely delighted to be the sole official supplier and to sponsor this most prestigious children’s book awards. Working with CILIP, we hope to gain more readers and develop a love of books from an early age.”
Annie Mauger, Chief Executive of CILIP, said “I’m absolutely delighted that Browns Books will be the official book supplier for the shadowing scheme. They offer shadowing groups a welcome discount to help their budgets stretch further and access to a range of ebooks, to help get more young people reading more – no matter what format the book is in.”

2. CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Children’s Book Awards and the Shadowing Scheme
The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded annually for a work of outstanding fiction for young people. Its sister award, the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding work of illustration for young people. The medals are judged by a panel of children’s librarians from CILIP’s Youth Libraries Group (YLG) who select the shortlists and winning titles, frequently spotting fresh talent ahead of the rest. Members of the panel combine an in-depth knowledge of books with daily experience of working and reading with young people.
The shadowing scheme began formally in 1994 and was soon recognised as an exciting way to engage young people nationally with books, broadening their reading for fun outside the prescriptive norms of the curriculum. Shadowing introduces children to top quality fiction and illustration, to new writers, illustrators and genres, and encourages breadth and depth of reading. The shortlisted books fire their imagination and help develop literacy and critical skills.
Visit www.ckg.org.uk for more information about the award or www.ckg.org.uk/shadowing to register a new shadowing group for free.
