CILIP awards 2020 Student Prize

Elizabeth Carney, Simon Cloudesley

CILIP is delighted to announce the joint recipients of the 2020 CILIP Student Prize, Elizabeth Carney and Simon Cloudesley. The prize is awarded for exceptional achievement in the field of LIS studies, either in terms of academic achievement, professional potential or support and development of other students with winners receiving £300.

Elizabeth is a recent Masters graduate in Information and Library Studies from the University of Strathclyde. Her nomination came from Dr Diane Pennington, Senior Lecturer in Information Science who commended her for her dissertation on library anxiety in the health library context. She won the department’s ILS prize on graduation and is to be awarded Strathclyde’s CILIPS student medal later this year. Elizabeth works for the University of Glasgow Libraries and CILIPS.

Simon is a recent Masters graduate in Library and Information Science from University College, London. His nomination came from Dr Alison Hicks, the acting programme director, who commended him for his commitment to social justice work, particularly his work fundraising for and volunteering with the ECHO refugee library in Athens. In his dissertation, he explored the role that information literacy plays within citizenship. He was a winner of the Cowley prize, awarded annually to two distinguished candidates for the MA. Simon works in Reader Services at the Bodleian.

The CILIP Student Prize is open to students completing British courses leading to an academic qualification accredited by CILIP. Nominations are made by the university and each student is invited to submit a 1000 word essay on how they felt the course had enhanced their professional practice in relation to their personal performance, the organisation in which they work and their wider professional context. Recipients must be members of CILIP.

Nominations for the 2021 award will open at the end of the year when all British accredited learning providers will be invited to send in recommendations.
