Facet Publishing announce the release of Introduction to Knowledge Organization by Claudio Gnoli.
In the rapidly expanding field of Knowledge organization (KO), this book provides a complete introduction presenting historical precedents, theoretical foundations and structural principles in a discursive, intelligible form. In the contemporary
context of global information exchange through linked data, Knowledge organization systems (KOS) need to be represented in standard inter-operable formats. Different formats for KOS representation including MARC, Dublin Core, SKOS
and OWL are introduced as well as the application of KO to a variety of activities and contexts; education, encyclopedic knowledge, the Internet, libraries, archives, museums, galleries and other institutions.
Readers can anticipate that both the theoretical and practical aspects of KO are covered in this book. The ontology and epistemology, KO structures, and types including tagging, taxonomies, thesauri, and classifications are all explored.
Incorporating a conceptual analysis of documents, and the applications of KO in the digital age are also covered. This book will be a valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners of KO, information organization, cataloguing
and classification.
Claudio Gnoli said of the text: ‘This book aims at providing a theoretical and practical introduction to the field of Knowledge organization. Where different approaches and systems are available, the choice will be to review them by explaining
their differences, costs and benefits, so that readers are able to orientate and start building their own path in the field.’
Marcia Lei Zeng, Professor of Library and Information Science at Kent State University, said: ‘The range and scope of the book present a state-of-the-art review of the whole domain of Knowledge organization.’
