Welcome to Libraries - an induction pack for frontline public library staff
Welcome to Libraries - your guide to working in public libraries is available as a digital publication and in a limited print format. The magazine-style pack celebrates public libraries as an indispensable part of local communities, and was funded by Arts Council England.
Library leaders want their service to reflect the rich diversity of the populations they serve, be free at the point of contact, and be welcoming and inclusive to all. This guide was created with those priorities in mind and with the help and expertise of members of staff in public libraries across England.
Welcome to Libraries was created to impart valuable insights and links for frontline public library staff and to welcome them into their new roles by providing the information they need as they begin their career journeys.
Key aspects of working in public libraries covered by Welcome to Libraries include:
- The variety of roles played by a modern public library service
- History and context of the public library sector in England
- Library ethics and their connection to public service
- Library science, including evidence-based
- Key elements of building diverse and inclusive collections, buildings and services
- Universal library offers: Reading, Creativity and Culture, Health and Well-being, and Information and Digital
According to the Ipsos Mori 2021 Veracity Poll, public library staff are trusted by 93 per cent of the population to tell the truth and give accurate information. Working as a member of library staff is one of the most rewarding and well-regarded professions with a strong identity, clear ethics and values.
CILIP's Chief Development Officer, Jo Cornish, is thrilled that the pack has been launched and commented:
"I know first-hand from my experience working in public libraries, that they are an invaluable resource in a local community, and an exciting and wide-ranging place to work. Public libraries are constantly evolving in order to meet the needs of their communities. They provide space, inspiration, resources, sanctuary and human connection. This could not be achieved without a committed, professional workforce. I am so proud to have been part of the team that created this guide. Welcome to Libraries will support the next generation of public library staff to pursue fulfilling and rewarding careers."
