The green library transformation at Bridgemary Library in Gosport is inspiring behaviour change in its local community by providing resources and motivation to engage with climate change.
Since becoming a Green Library, public IT usage has increased by 14 per cent, Storytime attendance has increased by 20 per cent, and footfall has also seen a slight increase of 0.3 per cent.
Green upgrades at Bridgemary Library resulted in energy reduction of 70 per cent from January to March 2024, compared to the same period last year. This means more efficient heating and a more comfortable space for building users.
Bridgemary is a Priority Place and Levelling Up for Culture Place, with parts of the ward among the ten per cent most deprived in the UK for education and skills. Gosport is the most deprived district in Hampshire for crime (Indices of Deprivation 2019).
A 2017 UN Report found that climate change disproportionately impacts disadvantaged groups, increasing their exposure to hazards, susceptibility to damage, and reducing their ability to recover.
The library has expanded its collection of climate-focused books, with a focus on children and young people to promote literacy and awareness.
As part of the Green Library transformation, the library is offering live performances and workshops on climate-related issues, providing flexible spaces to host community exhibitions and artistic endeavours. They are also providing support to education and empowerment amidst the cost-of-living crisis.
Staff and volunteers receive specialist training to navigate climate conversations and support visitors effectively.
Despite all the activity, the library continues to serve as a hub for resources and services, with dedicated quiet spaces for reading.
“My children love coming to this Library now – it is a lovely space for them,” said one parent about the green library transformation.
