UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer

CILIP Chief Executive Louis Coiffait-Gunn has written to new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to outline how libraries and information professionals can support the new government.

The letter of congratulation sets out CILIP’s work to support the new government’s priorities, outlining the roles of information professionals in delivering positive outcomes for communities and users across sectors.

In the letter, Louis states: “Many congratulations on your election win, the information profession looks forward to serving the public alongside you and your new government.

”Across the economy, our librarian, knowledge manager, and information professional members already play a vital role delivering your government’s missions – especially breaking down barriers to opportunity and growing the economy of the future.”

The letter builds on CILIP’s public affairs work and is part of a wider engagement strategy with key decision-makers at all levels. The aim is to highlight the role of the information professions in all walks of life

Louis adds in his letter to the Prime Minister: “[CILIP] champions our members’ positive impact, making people’s lives better by providing access to trustworthy knowledge and information, and inspiring culture. Information professionals provide services across the economy that go far beyond the traditional view of public libraries – whether that is supporting students in schools, colleges, and universities; helping researchers in universities, institutes and industry; or bolstering businesses of all shapes and sizes to thrive.”

CILIP is writing to other relevant appointees in the new government as they are announced.
