Charting the Future: CILIP President opens 2025 conference with call to ethical leadership

CILIP President Sue Lacey-Bryant

CILIP President Sue Lacey-Bryant officially opened CILIP Conference 2025 in Birmingham this morning with an inspiring address to a packed hall of library, information and knowledge professionals.

Framed around the symbolism of the North Star, the President reflected on the enduring role of the profession in guiding people and wider society through periods of uncertainty, change and complexity.

"In a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, our ethical principles and professional standards are a constant. They help us fix our course and adjust our sails."

Drawing on her own experiences, Sue highlighted how professional values, trusted networks, and continuous learning have shaped her career — and now stand as vital tools for the entire profession in the face of rapid technological change and shifting societal needs.

With AI and intellectual freedom to digital equity and inclusion woven through the conference programme, delegates were encouraged to see themselves not only as participants, but as leaders shaping the future of knowledge services.

"By choosing to be part of something bigger than ourselves, reflecting on our practice, and investing in our development, we can amplify our impact and be the change we want to see in the world."
