Cataloguers

Cataloguers supply structured descriptions and metadata for resources (such as books, articles, maps, images and objects) to enable library users to find what they need. You’ll need excellent IT and analytical skills for cataloguing.

Cataloguers everywhere you’ll find a library or resource collection and it’s a rapidly evolving field, so you’ll need to be prepared to stay on top of your CPD.

Qualifications and experience

An accredited degree or postgraduate qualification in library and information science is usually required. Knowledge or experience of cataloguing standards such as MARC21, AARC2, Dublin Care and RDA is essential.

Depending on what you’ll be cataloguing, knowledge of a particular language or subject area may also be useful.
