There is a broad range of roles for library and information professionals in the health and care sector ranging from more traditional library roles through to knowledge management. Roles in healthcare focus on providing knowledge and information to support evidence based decision making and you’ll need some knowledge of the healthcare sector and a good eye for statistics to be successful in these roles.

Working in this sector almost always involves collaborative working with other disciplines, so you’ll need to be a good team player with excellent communication skills. Healthcare librarians are often expected to train and assist clinicians in the use of resources and literature searching as well.

Job titles you’ll find in the healthcare sector include; clinical librarian, knowledge manager, outreach librarian, patient information specialist, public health evidence and knowledge specialist or primary care librarian.

Qualifications and experience

An accredited degree or postgraduate qualification in library and information science is usually required. Many employers also look for CILIP Chartership or a willingness to work towards Chartership for higher-grade roles.
