Working with new arrivals in public libraries

Working with new arrivals in public libraries

A CILIP Training Session for Staff Working in Public Libraries

Online, Half-Day Course

18 April 2023 10am-1pm

The session will look at the issue of people seeking sanctuary to the UK and deepen delegates’ understanding by reflecting on issues that affect the day-to-day lives of new arrivals. It will look at what it means to become a City of Sanctuary and a Library of Sanctuary. The session will consider what barriers new arrivals can face in accessing and using library services, what libraries are already doing to offer a welcome and what else could be developed.

Course level:

This course is suitable for staff at all levels. It is particularly suitable for library staff seeking to increase their knowledge of Libraries of Sanctuary.

Learning Objectives:

  • To develop understanding of sanctuary seekers and the role public libraries can play in providing a welcome to new arrivals to the UK
  • To learn about Libraries of Sanctuary
  • To discuss and share good practice on what libraries currently offer new arrivals
  • To discuss and develop ideas for development

Trainer: John Vincent

John Vincent has worked in the public sector since the 1960s, primarily for Hertfordshire, Lambeth and Enfield public library services. In 1997, he was invited to become part of the team that produced the UK's first review of public libraries and social exclusion (from which The Network, which he now coordinates, originated).

He is particularly interested in supporting the work that libraries do with young people in care, with LGBTQ+ people, and with people seeking sanctuary and other 'new arrivals' to the UK.

John runs courses and writes. In October 2021, City of Sanctuary published a second edition of his guide Libraries of Sanctuary Resource Pack and in November 2022 Facet Publishing published Libraries and Sanctuary: supporting refugees and other new arrivals. He is currently about to start writing another book for Facet Publishing, this time on libraries' responses to young people in care.

John is currently Chair of the CILIP Benevolent Fund.
