The 'full' membership rate is the annual rate members will pay if they do not qualify for a discount or concession
Discount
The discount rate is not communicated as part of the model, since it is designed to give CILIP more options to support specific outcomes and activities. The two initial discount rates we will be applying
are:
A 10% discount across all categories for people joining CILIP Boards and Committees
A 5% discount for members moving onto paying by Direct Debit (for their next year's fees only)
Part-time
CILIP recognises that many of our members, particularly women, are working under part-time contracts (which includes 'term-time-only' contracts in schools, colleges and Universities).
This is a special concessionary rate, equivalent to a 20% discount, which makes CILIP membership more attractive and affordable for people working part-time in the profession.
A part-time worker is someone who works fewer hours than a full-time worker. There is no specific number of hours that makes someone full or part-time, but a full-time worker will usually work 35 hours
or more a week. Whether someone is considered as working 'full-time' or 'part-time' is often specified in their employment contract.
Concession
We have introduced a concessionary rate which equates to a 40% discount on all categories of membership (other than student, see below) for people who qualify for one of the following concessions:
Low income (defined as people who are in receipt of Universal Credit or income support)
Carers (defined as people who are in receipt of a Carers Allowance)
People with disabilities (self-defined)
Retired members
Unemployed
Student & Apprentice
The two tiers of student membership (which are based on a fixed price rather than a discount or concession) are:
Students enrolled in a course of instruction that is accredited by CILIP (£43.20), and;
Students enrolled in a course of instruction that is not accredited by CILIP (£64.80)
Because they are effectively enrolled in a course of study that is accredited by CILIP, Apprentices on the LAIS Level 3 Apprenticeship Programme will be able to benefit from the lower (£43.20) rate.
Free
In 2020, the CILIP Board introduced a 'free' membership for people from ethnically diverse backgrounds wishing to join CILIP Boards and Committees. The free membership is for their first term of office,
after which if they stand for subsequent terms, we would ask them to pay the standard membership fee or a discount/concessionary rate depending on their qualification.
Paused
Members can 'freeze' their membership for a fixed period until they are in a position to resume their membership payments. This may include, for example, members who become unemployed or who are on parental
leave.
Additional association options
Alongside membership we have some additional options designed to enhance and extend our support for the profession:
Additional categories
Membership Plus
Membership fee plus £54.00
Non-practitioner Member
£86.40
Supporter
£32.40
Friend
£129.60
Membership Plus - is a discretionary £54 contribution that members can make on top of their membership fee which allows us to deliver on much-needed development programmes and campaigns
Non-practitioner Membership - a non-voting membership category for people who want to support and be involved in our Member Networks, but for whom CILIP membership would not be appropriate. This category is only
for membership of one Special Interest Group.
Friend and Supporter - two non-voting donor categories, allowing CILIP to fundraise from people who wish to support our work on behalf of the library and information sector.
Our commitment to Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion
CILIP acknowledges that we have to confront, challenge and overcome inequality in our profession. Our membership model gives us the tools we need to begin to drive real change - both for ourselves and our membership.
Free membership for ethnically diverse professionals joining our Boards and Committees

Recognising and addressing pay inequality for women (particularly on part-time contracts)
