Call for Papers - ARLG Spring Conference 2019

Posted By Jackie Oliver, 08 January 2019

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Academic & Research Libraries Group (ARLG) 2019, to be hosted on June 3, 4 2019 in Teesside University, Darlington Campus. In response to concerns raised about our conference theme we have amended our call for papers.

The Academic and Research Libraries Group (ARLG) aims to provide a focus and forum for the professional concerns and interests of everyone working in academic (HE and FE) or research libraries. The ARLG conference is a great opportunity for participants to hear and learn about best practice, to be inspired by exemplars and to expand their network. This welcoming conference brings delegates together from a range of different institutions and backgrounds and we especially would like to see students and new professionals attend. We encourage debate and welcome submissions which adopt critical approaches as we all work through an incredible time of change. We want delegates to take away practical advice from the conference which will help them in their everyday roles, so examples of projects or activities that you have worked on would be very welcome.

The overall theme for the conference is: Working Smarter in a Time of Change.

We are looking for sessions to cover the following strands:

• Information Literacy

• UX, Marketing & Promotion

• Resources (staffing & budgets)

• Measuring Impact

• Supporting Research

• Collection Development and Management.

Workshops

Workshops should be practical and allow participants to engage with new content. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate new approaches and creativity which has involved little or no cost. When submitting your abstract we ask you to include a summary of the intended learning outcomes and a workshop plan outlining activities and timings. Workshops are 60 minutes long. Abstract length: 500 words (including workshop outline)

Short presentation

Have you recently completed a project on a shoestring budget? How did this work for you? We are interested in hearing the positives and negatives! Short presentations give you 20 minutes to take a high level overview of key elements of the project and share both what you did and what has changed (30 minutes total). Abstract length: 300 words

Show and Tell

Four show-and-tell presenters are grouped for a 60-minute session. The show-and-tell presenters are each allotted five minutes to introduce their initiative/project on no more than two slides. The presenters are also provided with a display area, suitable for a laptop for film viewing, a poster or hand-out summarising the initiative, and/or examples of materials. After all show-and-tell presenters have given their brief presentations, session participants can visit the displays and talk further with presenters about their work. The time available allows participants to review several projects and talk individually with presenters. An advantage for presenters is that they can inform participants about their work via a variety of display materials. Abstract length: 300 words

Lightning Talks

Lightning talks are 5 minute presentations which give the opportunity to share new, exciting, or just interesting projects from the past year. Presentations can be delivered individually or by a group/team, and can be presented with or without slides. Abstract length: 300 words

ARLG is committed to encouraging diversity at the conference and we would specifically like to encourage proposals from members of the BAME community and other under-represented communities in the sector.

Deadline for proposals:

• Call for presentations opens: 4 December 2018

• Call for presentations deadline: 1 February 2019

• Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 1 March 2019

• Full presentation submission deadline: 24 May 2019

Applications must be sent to arlg@cilip.org.uk Your abstract should include why people should attend the talk and what they might get out of it. You should consider how you are going to engage delegates All proposals are peer reviewed by the conference planning team. Registration for the conference will open in March 2019. In the meantime, please save the conference date in your diaries, submit a proposal, and please help us spread the news about ARLG Conference 2019 by sharing this mail with your colleagues and follow us on Twitter @CILIP_ARLG

Happy New Year to all! CILIP are looking for volunteers from across the SIGs and RMNs to form a digital working group to help develop a new framework for business planning from 2020. ARLG National Committee are opening up this opportunity to both national and regional committee members. If anyone is interested, please let me know by end of day Friday 11th January 2019 by email to secretary.arlg@cilip.org.uk. The first meeting date is 31.1.19 at 5pm at CILIP HQ and it is envisaged that the group will meet 3 times from January-March 2019 and will report to the MN Forum in April 2019, so a quite tight turn around time. ARLG Conference 2019 - Call for Papers

Posted By Laura Williams, 03 December 2018
Updated: 06 December 2018

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Academic & Research Libraries Group (ARLG) 2019,  to be hosted on June 3, 4 2019 in Teesside University, Darlington Campus. In response to concerns raised about our conference theme we are amending our call for papers.

CILIP ARLG have taken your comments and response to our call for papers seriously and are willing to learn and adapt.

We want to counter the ‘more with less’ trope by taking a more critical approach in our conference. Our conference title will be altered to capture this and we are clarifying the conference description

We are not endorsing cuts, the reality is that nearly all of us are expected to do more with the resources we have.

We want to enable people to learn from each other about working effectively in difficult circumstances.

We welcome debate in this area and would be happy to receive suggested papers which adopt critical approaches

We want people to take practical advice from the conference which will help them in their everyday roles, so examples of projects or activities you have done would be great.

Happy New Year fellow ARLG members

Posted By Jackie Oliver, 10 January 2018
Hello everyone! A very happy 2018 to all ARLG members. It looks like it is going to be a busy year as we all get to grips with the new YM platform and all the fabulous functionality that comes with it. We hope that this will pull us forward into the 21st century and offer us a versatile and flexible tool that we can use creatively to share information and to communicate / collaborate with our members. So what's new so far? ARLG are looking at InformZ which is the new tool to replace "Communicator". This has a modern interface and will offer groups and regional networks the ability to get communications out to the wider membership. So far it looks fairly easy to use so ARLG are hoping to get a first bulletin out in the next few weeks. The national ARLG committee are planning their next committee meeting and are bravely (or foolishly) going to attempt a virtual meeting, eek! We will see how that works in practice. Lots of work for the committee in 2018 and hopefully we will be able to offer some CPD events of interest right across our membership. Jackie (Honorary Secretary - National ARLG committee)

Welcome to ARLG

Posted By Jackie Oliver, 28 November 2017
Hello everyone, Welcome to the Academic and Research Libraries Group (ARLG). We are a well established SIG within CILIP and we have a great geographical representation across the UK. The current committee is newly established in 2017 taking over at a key point in CILIP's development as they roll out the Your Membership (YM) platform. The national ARLG committee are keen to raise our profile professionally and to engage with our membership across HE, FE and in research. We are trying to provide clear and timely communication for members that comes with a transparency that will encourage members to engage with us at either national or regional level and across the sectors we represent as a SIG. If you have any suggestions for events or for CPD that would be of benefit to members don't hesitate to get in touch with us. You can also reach the national officers directly at: chairarlg@cilip.org.uk secretaryarlg@cilip.org.uk treasurerarlg@cilip.org.uk. Check our postings on our group page to link to our group documentation on our shared Google Drive. Jackie (ARLG Secretary - National Committee)
