Supporting African-Caribbean family history research
Thursday 19th October, 7pm
To celebrate Black History Month, we are delighted to be hosting a webinar about supporting African-Caribbean family history research! Family tree and ancestry research support forms a part of most public libraries’ offer. This kind of research can be especially difficult and emotional for descendants of enslaved people, but can prove all the more rewarding and valuable in terms of identity
and cultural heritage. This session will provide an introductory overview of the available resources that you can share with your patrons to help them trace their genealogy through British family
history records, passenger lists, Caribbean family history records, plantation records and even language records all the way back in Africa. It will be of interest to library workers who support family history enquiries, as well as people interested in researching their own family history. The webinar will be led by Basia Godel, CILIP Yorkshire & Humberside's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and a librarian at Leeds public libraries. It is free and open to all (both CILIP members and non-members are welcome to attend!) The Zoom link will be in your registration confirmation email. We will record the session and share it afterwards with everyone who registered.
