Programme details
2 - 2. 15 - Introductions and welcome
2.15 - 2.45 - Stella Dextre Clarke - Lonely Planet Guide to the Tony Kent Strix Award: How to be a Winner
At first glance the answer to the 'What makes a winner?' question is simple, enshrined in the well-publicised criteria built around Science, Service Delivery and/or Education and Organisational Structure.
In practice this admits a huge diversity of different types of contribution to the field of information retrieval (IR). To compare and rank the merits of the achievements of past winners would be a challenge,
with subjectivity an almost inevitable ingredient. This short talk will start with the achievements of the pioneering Tony Kent himself, before picking out aspects of the expanding scope of IR that have been
recognised among past winners of the Award. What are the qualities that should distinguish the Winners of the future? The presenter will express a personal view, and invite members of our virtual audience to
contribute their own answers to the question.
2.45 - 3.15 Sandra Ward and Charles Oppenheim - A salute to Martin White
3.15 - Award presentation by UKeiG chair David Ball
Refreshment break
3.30 - 4.15 - Martin White - Reflections, Opportunities and Challenges: 1948-2028. 1948 was the year Martin was born, but also the year of the Royal Society Conference on Scientific Information. 1948
also marked the launch of Jason Farradane into the world of information science.
4.15 - 4.30 - Q&A and close
