Communities and libraries: Raising what matters!

This session will introduce the work of the CILIP Community, Diversity and Equality Group (CDEG), give a brief background as to how the Group has developed over the last 40 years or so, and then focus on what we would like to do next – and invite people to join us. 

CDEG has a key role to play in relation to CILIP and the wider CILIP community, and we would like to explore that too.

Finally, we will open discussions on some key current community issues, just to give a flavour of our work. As part of this, we will be joined by speaker Joanne Fitzpatrick of the Neurodivergent Library and Information Staff Network (NLISN) who says: “In this short talk, I will describe what Neurodivergency is, the kinds of issues Neurodivergent people face in the library workplace, all based on survey data from an Academic Libraries North funded project completed in 2023. I will then discuss NLISN, a network devised as a result of this project, and the work that we are completing.”

Community, Diversity and Equality Group achieves these by:

• Providing a forum for progressive, socially responsible views on library and information issues.
• Supporting and advocating on behalf of library workers who believe that libraries are agents of social change, with the power to transform the lives of individuals and communities
• Developing partnerships and strategic alliances with voluntary and statutory organisations, nationally and internationally, engaged with libraries and the struggle for social justice.
• Conducting campaigns and raise wider awarness of library and information activities that promote social justice.
• Monitoring, evaluating and challenging our professional values, with special emphasis on embedding diversity and equality across all aspects of CILIP's work.
• Promoting and working to improve freedom of access to information.
• Promoting and working to improve accessibility of information in all formats.
