Information rights managers /Freedom of Information Officers


Information managers, officers and assistants

Information rights managers handle the storage, retrieval and use of information in accordance with information rights legislation, they are also responsible for the secure storage of that information and managing who can access it. They usually work closely with data protection officers, information governance mangers and freedom of information officers.

Freedom of Information Officers can be found in every organisation to which the Freedom of Information Act applies and are responsible for the organisation’s compliance with the Act. This includes acknowledging, recording and responding to any requests made and ensuring that responses comply with other information rights legislation such as GDPR.

Qualifications and experience

Both information rights managers and freedom of information officers need a thorough and current knowledge of UK, EU and relevant international legislation. Entry level positions in these roles do exist, but most people come into one of these roles from a records or information management background.
