How many Chief Information Officers are there? I can't answer that, but I took a look at an industry I know...

I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I saw at the end of last year that a couple of the major pharma companies, Novartis and GSK had hired or were hiring Chief Digital Officers (CDO). That wasn't necessarily a surprise, the increasing use of data, particularly patient data to inform drug development, along side efforts to engage with patients or potential patients using social media is increasingly critical in the pharma industry. Data is big business in pharma, and the fact that Amazon, Google (via Alphabet and Verily), and Facebook are all making their presence felt in different health-relatated fields demonstrates that very clearly. The new CDO hires did make me ask myself though how many pharma companies had someone with a specific "information" responsibility in their C-Suite? I didn't have time to look at every company but I did look across the top 20 companies (by pharma sales in 2016). The results are in the attached Excel file. What did I learn? Only of a quarter of the companies have either a Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Digital Officer (CDO). However a further 9 did have a C-Suite officer responsible either for IT or more commonly for Compliance. I looked to see if I could find something of their job description or objectives. I've highlighted on the sheet where they have clear information-related objectives. Interestingly, in light of the current project to re-publish the "Information as an Asset - a board agenda" publication one C-Suite officer, at Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), does specifically mention being responsible for the "information assets" of the organisation. What I also found interesting is the 4 out of the 5 CIO/CDOs had an engineering education. Is that something we as information professionals could explore further? Are there skills that are being developed as part of that education that we could adopt and learn from? Worth a further look I think...watch out for a later blog. I'm not offering any major conclusions from this exercise, but it did make me wonder how this compares to other industries. Let me know if any of you have any data you would like to share.

Thank you Denise! This is really interesting. I know that we've spoken recently, but I've only just got round to looking at the data that you've gathered in your spreadsheet. I don't have any such information on other industries, but it would be interesting to extend what you did to a number of other key industry sectors (e.g. financial services, aerospace, food retail...) and to undertake a little analysis on that basis. Would there be scope for turning that into a little project? Would anyone be interested?

Hi Denise & Stephane, I have been in the oil and gas sector for over forty years, and I'm somewhat of a 'gray geek' nowadays. I made the leap of faith from engineering to IM some twenty years ago, and I actually have no hair left to pull out with frustration at the attitudes to I&KM. (See my article in the ISTC Communicator, Oct 2015). My face to face experiences have made me even more determined to get the message across at the highest levels. However, as we all know, making a presentation at the highest level is an acheivement in itself. So, from my perspective in the oil and gas industry, I can wholeheartedly tell you that it is the slowest moving mammoth on the planet. When we look at the revenue generation in this sector (Trillions of Dollars) most international operators don't even have an information manager let alone a CIO/CDO. Recently we rolled out our GDPR strategy to the company, most people still think it's some kind of IT Thing! Of course there are many factors which create this environment, and we as I&KM Professionals are tasked with presenting the benefits. But as always people get in the way with the age old questions, what does it cost and waht's in it for me?? It can be a life-long struggle trying to change peoples habits, so I'm hoping that our group can raise the game and help us all with ideas and practical tips to drive our message home!

Hi James and Stéphane,  thanks both for your comments, apologies for the delay in replying (been drowning in a large project).  Really interesting to read James that  you came into information from engineering.  It seems like that is a background for the CIO and CDO too. Fascinating too that oil and gas are not more on board with IM and KM.  There's definitely a lot of work for this group to do and our recent survey, results of which are going on the web site very soon, show that we need to come up with ideas, strategy documents and practical tips to help people inside organisations manage IM and KM upwards.
