Academic and Research Libraries Group AGM Tues 6 February 2024 15:00 - 16:30 via MS Teams

Posted By Sarah A. Elsegood, 18 January 2024
Updated: 23 January 2024

Academic and Research Libraries Group is holding an AGM on Tues 6 February 2024 from 15:00 – 16:30 via MS Teams. The meeting will review the results of a CILIP/ARLG member vote on a resolution to evolve into one national Special Interest Group with Regional Event Co-ordinators in order to remain viable. We ask that members vote before the start of the meeting.

Vote on the resolution

AGM LINK to attend the meeting

Nominations:

CILIP/ARLG Members are encouraged to nominate themselves for committee roles on this ARLG National committee. Once we have recruited the minimum 3 key roles we will look to broaden representation with new roles suggested by members.

Why are we proposing these changes?

In alignment with the CILIP Community Strategy and for the following reasons we are proposing a restructure of how ARLG operates as a Special Interest Group and would like to invite you to vote on these proposals. In putting this set of proposals in front of you we seek to ensure the ongoing viability of our group and our work for our members. There will be an opportunity during the AGM for Q&A on the CILIP Community Strategy and we welcome CILIP Director of Sector Development Sonia Ramdhian.

  • ARLG is an unusual Special Interest Group for having regional sub-committees. CILIP HQ only supports the National Group in terms of finances.

  • ARLG National Committee has been non-viable since the resignation of the Chair in 2019, having only a Treasurer. Without a viable National Committee, ARLG cannot continue to operate.

  • Despite some mergers, several regional committees continue to report that they are not viable at present or have ongoing difficulties recruiting and retaining active committee members or finding time to meet as well as plan events.

  • A strong National Committee drawing members from those keen individuals in active regional committees who wish to continue in committee roles, can support the activities across the regions, e.g. sharing publicity functions, event ideas, and creating new roles to enable succession planning and draw in Professional Registration candidates to gain experience.

  • We would like to encourage more collaboration between regional groups and other Sector-specific Special Interest Groups and Regional Member Networks, sharing good practice and the work involved in planning and running events.

Join us at the ARLG AGM on Tues 6 February from 15.00-16.30 click the button below to join
  • Don't forget to vote - you may vote even if unavailable to attend the meeting.

Measuring demand for academic library books

Posted By Charles Benjamin, 20 March 2023
I work at Queen Margaret University library as a Helpdesk Adviser. One of my duties involves running a daily report for High Demand Holds. If there are 4 or more holds, I then take the student details, course details, book details and after searching our suppliers website, submit a purchase request to the appropriate subject librarian. I wondered, however, if there are other more effective ways to measure the demand: supply ratio for library stock? One problem is that students will sometimes decline to place a hold on a book if they need the book urgently.

Looking for contacts in small specialist libraries

Posted By Amanda J. Taylor, 17 January 2023
Hello I lead KM, library and literature searching at NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) - we're an independent not-for-profit research organisation of around 250 colleagues. We have IRO status with UKRI/ESRC but otherwise our 'ac.uk' connection is limited to our URL! One of my perennial challenges is finding cost-effective solutions to variable literature searching and retrieval needs and explaining the high costs of database access to colleagues who don't appreciate licensing restrictions and think we must be able to buy into some wonder bundle or access via HEIs etc. Our KM/library function is small, low budget but servicing wide ranging and ever changing internal needs - if this sounds familiar and you'd be up for occasional networking I'd love to hear from you! Similarly if you're based in an HEI and you're aware of any external memberships with remote access that we could be eligible for I'd be super interested (suprised and delighted!) And of course any education liaison librarians :-) Thanks Amanda

Fine Art in the Library Survey

Posted By Architectural Association Inc, 13 July 2021
Updated: 13 July 2021

Hi, I'd really appreciate it if you would participate in this survey; it is for a colleague who is studying towards a library qualification. Eleanor Gawne

Hello all, I write in the hopes that you will consider participating in my research survey on fine art collections (paintings, prints, sculptures, etc.) held in non-art specialist libraries in the United Kingdom. I am completing this research for my dissertation as part of my Masters of Library and Information Studies at UCL. Completing this survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes and is completely anonymous. More than one person from a library can complete the survey as it based on individual experience. The survey will remain open until July 20th 2021. Thank you for your participation.

Many thanks,
