You are invited to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of UKeiG on 22nd July 2021
You are invited to join our free Members' Day and Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Zoom on Thursday 22nd September from 2 p.m. The Members' Day will focus on Information Mapping and the History of the Institute of Information Scientists. The full programme is below. The official AGM documents can be found here. Included are the minutes of the 2020 AGM, the official notice of the AGM and our Annual Report. The event is free to all CILIP and UKeiG Members. For Non-Members there is a nominal charge of £20.
To book the event click here.
Programme for the afternoon:
2 p.m. Mapping Information Landscapes, Andrew Whitworth (Manchester Institute of Education)
This talk will explore various ways in which mapping can be used as a tool for teaching and developing information literacy, in both formal and informal educational settings. Maps allow learners to develop a collective understanding of what information is important to them, represent this understanding graphically or discursively, and communicate it to others. Techniques including the use of geographical maps, concept maps, and text-based (or discursive) maps will be introduced, along with evaluations of their differing impacts.
3 p.m. AGM
3:30 p.m. The genealogy of UKeiG – our private passion, Martin White and Sandra Ward.
Over the last two years Sandra and Martin have been writing the history of the Institute of Information Scientists. The IIS was founded in 1958 and eventually merged with the LA to form CILIP in 2002. Along the way the Institute was instrumental in forming UK Online User Group (UKOLUG), the current edition of which is UKeiG. The initial release of the History on its own web site will take place later this month. Sandra and Martin became members in the early 1970s, and will be talking about how the IIS was instrumental in ensuring that the information community in the UK could take advantage of digital information services. The talk will profile some of the people who shaped the development of the Institute over the last six decades and also the careers of the two presenters.
4.30 p.m. Close

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2020 Jason Farradane Award is Tom Wilson (Professor Emeritus, University of Sheffield, UK). The prestigious award is given in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the library and information profession.
Professor David Allen, Professor of Information Management at Leeds University Business School, nominated Professor Wilson, supported by Professor Blaise Cronin (Rudy Professor Emeritus of Information Science at Indiana University), Professor Hazel Hall (Professor of Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University), Dr Anoush Simon (Head of Department, Department of Information Studies, Aberystwyth University), David Streatfield (Principle, Information Management Associates), and Professor Charles Oppenheim (Visiting Professor, Robert Gordon University).
The judges were impressed that his research fulfilled three of the criteria for the award:
• Contributing to the creation, promotion and exploitation of digital resources and service
• Demonstrating excellence in library and information science education and teaching
• Making a significant contribution to the theory and practice of library and information science.
Professor Allen comments: 'Our primary reason for nominating Professor Tom Wilson is his pioneering work in open access through the foundation and editing of Information Research: an international electronic journal. When the journal was established in 1995, it was one of the earliest electronic journals to be created. It was originally intended as a channel for promoting research within what was then the Department of Information Studies at Sheffield University, but was developed into a peer-reviewed journal from 1994 onwards. Professor Wilson acted as publisher until 2017, when that responsibility was assumed by the University of Borås in Sweden, with Professor Wilson as Editor-in-Chief throughout the period. As Editor, Web designer, and HTML coder, he has, singlehandedly, built the journal into one of the foremost journals in the field of information science.

CILIP Special Interest Groups the Knowledge and Information Management Group (K&IM) and the UK e-information Group (UKeiG), have announced two joint winners of their prestigious 2020 Information Manager of the Year Award: Natasha Howard (North East London Foundation Trust) and William Kilbride (Digital Preservation Coalition.)
They come from completely different environments but both have made a significant contribution to knowledge and information management through their work and professionalism.
Natasha is Library Manager for the North East London Foundation Trust which, when she took the job on, was a new organisation that had no established library service. Through her professional leadership and management skills, the service has gone from strength to strength with expansion and improvements, plans for innovative projects and collaborative partnerships. The library now provides services to a diverse population of more than 6,000 staff who are based at over 200 sites in east London, south West Essex and parts of Kent. She is 'thrilled and surprised’ to receive the award.
William is Executive Director of the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), a global not-for-profit organisation which provides advocacy, knowledge exchange, assurance and partnership around issues of digital preservation. Through his energy, enthusiasm and commitment William has taken DPC, in 10 years, from a small UK-centric organisation of 25 organisations to one that has over 100 members across 5 continents. He has built up a successful community of practice for information managers and digital preservation practitioners; approaching a tricky and technical subject in a way that is welcoming and supportive to everyone regardless of their job title, institution or level of experience. 'I am very honoured to be named Information Manager of the Year, sharing the title with Natasha, whose work in the NHS is truly inspiring,” William says.
UKeiG Chair David Ball noted: 'We are particularly pleased to present this year's award to two outstanding candidates. Natasha and William demonstrate the reach and richness of talent in the profession.'
The award will be presented at the Knowledge & Information Management (K&IM SIG) Awards 2020 on Wednesday 11th November.
Please join us at this free event as we celebrate all of the K&IM Award winners for 2020. The keynote address will be given by Paul Corney (CILIP Vice-President).

UKeiG call for nominations for its 2020 Early Career Award - deadline Tuesday 30th June 2020
UKeiG is committed to encouraging and championing excellence and innovation across the profession. The Group sponsors two prestigious awards: Jason Farradane and Tony Kent Strix, and collaborates with the Knowledge and Information Management Special Interest Group on the Information Manager Year Award.
UKeiG also supports the continuing professional development of library and information students and early career professionals with a range of bursaries to encourage research, information exchange and best practice.
UKeiG would like to remind you that the call for nominations for the 2020 Early Career Award is the end of this month.
The UKeiG Early Career Award 2020 will celebrate extraordinary and inspirational enterprise in early-career professionals who are members of CILIP. A prize of £1,000 and a trophy will be awarded.
A key criterion for all applications is some element of digital information or information science. As the UK electronic information Group our primary focus is developments and innovations in anything digital, embracing search and information retrieval, web content development, online resources and services and digital literacy, for example.
The Award will be presented to early-career professionals who are members of CILIP and have no more than five years’ work experience since gaining their qualification.
Have you made an inspirational or enterprising difference in the workplace or in the wider profession? UKeiG is looking for a level of professional commitment that has resulted in achievements beyond what is expected of your ‘day job.’
Nominations will be accepted from colleagues, managers or from the individual concerned - although in the latter case it will be essential to provide signed evidence of support from a sponsor or referee.
Process: The call for nominations is now open. Nominations should take the form of a short descriptive statement demonstrating the difference that the nominee has made to their colleagues, clients or the wider profession. Please provide any documentary support and evidence of the achievement.
The award is only open to early career professionals resident in the UK.
****The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 30th June 2020***
A Panel has been appointed to judge entries and award the prize (it will include UkeiG Chair, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, and an external judge). The Panel's decision will be final.
Award winners will be expected to write an article about their achievements for publication in UKeiG’s online journal eLucidate.

UKeiG is proud to announce the launch of the latest issue of eLucidate (Volume 16, issue 2 2020) on a new web platform, using the Public Knowledge Project’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) hosted by the University of Alberta.
https://elucidate-ukeig.org.uk/
PKP is a multi-university initiative developing free open source software and conducting research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing.
Open Journal Systems (OJS) is an open source software application for managing and publishing scholarly articles and issues online. Originally developed and released by PKP in 2001 to improve access to research, it is a widely used open source international journal publishing platform.
In the first phase of our OJS project the entire sixteen year run of eLucidate, previously only available to readers as an entire issue PDF download, can now be searched and downloaded on an article by article basis. You can also register to receive notifications of new content and publications. Just click on the ‘Register’ button at the top-right of the eLucidate home page and tick the box: ‘Yes, I would like to be notified of new publications and announcements’ near the bottom of the screen. Authors are now able make online submissions to eLucidate. You will first need to register a user account with the journal and log in. Start the process by clicking on the ‘Register’ button at the top-right of the home page.
The second phase of the project will utilise OJS as a tool for managing UKeiG's editorial workflow. It offers some great features, including peer review. OJS is also integrated with scholarly publishing services including Crossref, ORCiD, and DOAJ and is recommended by Google Scholar for ease of indexing and discoverability.
David Ball, Chair of UKeiG, welcomed the launch, saying 'this represents a major step forward for eLucidate, in terms of its continuation as a Diamond Open Access journal and of the discoverability and accessibility of its content. The comprehensive functionality of the OJS software will be of great benefit to readers, authors and the editorial team of eLucidate. We are most grateful to the University of Alberta for their support and hosting.'
Special thanks go to Sonya Betz and Emily Zheng from the University of Alberta Libraries team for patiently holding our hands throughout this project, and to UKeiG management committee member Ralph Samuels for his time, effort and oversight of the project.
