K&IM and UKeiG announce the Information Manager of the Year Award 2021

CILIP Special Interest Groups, the Knowledge and Information Management Group (K&IM) and the UK e-information Group (UKeiG), are delighted to announce that the winner of their prestigious Information Manager of the Year Award, 2021 is Dr Andrew Cox, Senior Lecturer, Information School, Sheffield University.

The award will be presented at the Knowledge & Information Management virtual Awards evening on Wednesday 10th November starting at 5. 30 pm. Please join us for this free event as we celebrate all the K&IM Award winners for 2021.

The Information Manager of the Year Award is presented to professionals who have raised awareness of, and made a significant contribution to, the value and impact of knowledge and information management in the workplace and across the LIS sector.

The judging panel was unanimous in its decision that Andrew has had an outstanding and distinguished career as a library and information science researcher, teacher and author. His research interests include the evolution of library work in response to contemporary challenges like big data, RDM and AI; new modes of learning; and the crisis in mental health and well-being.

His independently researched report – ‘The Impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession’ - published by CILIP in 2020 with the support of Health Education England ’ - called for a ‘joined-up and coherent response from information professionals, enabling us to maximise the benefits of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics for information users while mitigating the emerging risks.’

Andrew’s nomination was accompanied by a glowing seal of approval from Nick Poole, CEO CILIP and Sue Lacey-Bryant, National Lead, NHS Knowledge and Library Services and CILIP Trustee.

‘Dr Cox is a leading figure in developing new thinking about the implications of new technologies for the information community. His 2017 research paper for SCONUL, “Mapping the Future of Academic Libraries” – (co-authored with Stephen Pinfield and Sophie Rutter) - enabled the HE/academic library community to re-think their role in an age of AI, machine learning and big data. His recent AI report is a landmark piece of research, a central contribution to the development of a “future-ready” library, information and knowledge workforce which sets an agenda for the development of our specialist workforce of today and tomorrow. Crystallising the implications of the fourth industrial revolution for the sector, his work demonstrates a talent for grasping complexity while remaining strongly connected to the core purpose of librarianship and information science.’

Call for nominations: K&IM and UKeiG Information Manager of the Year Award 2021

CILIP Special Interest Groups the Knowledge and Information Management Group (K&IM) and the UK e-information Group (UKeiG), are delighted to announce to the library, information and knowledge community our joint call for nominations for the international Information Manager of the Year Award 2021.

 

Nominations should be received no later than 6 pm on Friday 24th September 2021.

 

The award is given in recognition of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the discipline of knowledge and information management through their work and professionalism by meeting one or more of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrating excellence in the use of knowledge and information management techniques
  • Raising awareness of the value and impact of knowledge and information management in the workplace and the wider library and information profession
  • Making a major contribution to the theory and practice of knowledge and information management

Key characteristics that the judging panel will look for in nominations are innovation, initiative, originality and practicality.

 

Nominations should take the form of a short description of how the nominee has excelled (a document of no more than 750 words), together with full contact details of both the nominee and the nominator. Do not forget to include any documentary evidence, references or links to content which may support the nomination.

Winners of the 2020 Information Manager of the Year award

CILIP Special Interest Groups the Knowledge and Information Management Group (K&IM) and the UK e-information Group (UKeiG), have announced two joint winners of their prestigious 2020 Information Manager of the Year Award: Natasha Howard (North East London Foundation Trust) and William Kilbride (Digital Preservation Coalition.) 

They come from completely different environments but both have made a significant contribution to knowledge and information management through their work and professionalism.

Natasha is Library Manager for the North East London Foundation Trust which, when she took the job on, was a new organisation that had no established library service.  Through her professional leadership and management skills, the service has gone from strength to strength with expansion and improvements, plans for innovative projects and collaborative partnerships. The library now provides services to a diverse population of more than 6,000 staff who are based at over 200 sites in east London, south West Essex and parts of Kent. She is 'thrilled and surprised’ to receive the award. 

William is Executive Director of the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), a global not-for-profit organisation which provides advocacy, knowledge exchange, assurance and partnership around issues of digital preservation.   Through his energy, enthusiasm and commitment William has taken DPC, in 10 years, from a small UK-centric organisation of 25 organisations to one that has over 100 members across 5 continents.  He has built up a successful community of practice for information managers and digital preservation practitioners; approaching a tricky and technical subject in a way that is welcoming and supportive to everyone regardless of their job title, institution or level of experience. 'I am very honoured to be named Information Manager of the Year, sharing the title with Natasha, whose work in the NHS is truly inspiring,” William says.

UKeiG Chair David Ball noted: 'We are particularly pleased to present this year's award to two outstanding candidates. Natasha and William demonstrate the reach and richness of talent in the profession.'

The award will be presented at the Knowledge & Information Management (K&IM SIG) Awards 2020 on Wednesday 11th November.

The CILIP K&IM and UKeIG Information Manager of the Year 2020

This annual award is jointly presented by CILIP’s special interest groups - Knowledge and Information Management (K&IM) and UK electronic Information Group (UKeIG). It is awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the discipline through their work and professionalism by meeting one or more of the following criteria:

•   Excellence in the use of information management techniques throughout the workplace
•   Raising the awareness by example of information management within the workplace and the profession
•   A major contribution to the theory and practice of information management.

Nominations are asked to include a short descriptive statement - around two or three pages - demonstrating how the nominee has excelled. The most successful applications will be those providing clear documentary support or evidence of the achievement.

UKeiG and K&IM announce the 2019 Information Manager of the Year Award

CILIP Special Interest Groups the Knowledge and Information Management Group (K&IM) and the UK e-information Group (UKeiG), are delighted to announce that the joint winners of the 2019 Information Manager of the Year Award are Liz Hunwick, Library Services Manager and Sarah Lanney, Library Resources Manager at Basildon Healthcare Library, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Trust.

The award is given in recognition of a individuals who have made a significant contribution to the discipline of knowledge and information management through their work and professionalism. Their work raising awareness of the value and impact of knowledge and information management in their organisation was praised by the judging panel.

The winning trophy and certificate will be presented at the K&IM awards ceremony on the evening of Wednesday 13th November 2019 5 pm to 8.15 pm.

Becca Parrott, Clinical Outreach Librarian at Harlow Healthcare Library, Princess Alexandra Hospital nominated Liz and Sarah for the award: “When they took on the management of Harlow Healthcare Library as well as maintaining management of Basildon Healthcare Library; Liz and Sarah embarked on an epic journey modernising library services; revamping resources; training and recruiting library staff; rebranding and promoting library and information services to staff who were previously unaware that a library even existed.  They have both consistently gone above and beyond for their staff, service users, and our profession, and I am incredibly pleased they are being recognised for this. They’ve shown dedication, tenacity and endurance, combined with the strategic prowess required to align Harlow Healthcare Library  to national objectives (such as Knowledge for Healthcare and the NHS Library Quality Assurance Framework (LQAF), whilst identifying and meeting the needs of Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust staff and the goals of the executive team."

Andy Morris, Chief Medical Officer at the Trust, said: “Harlow Healthcare Library has grown into an effective library and knowledge service, supporting clinicians and managers in their work and underpinning the practice of evidence-based healthcare in the Trust. The HHL team deserve a big thank you for their hard work in raising the quality of the service, which benefits not only our staff, but in the long-term is a huge asset in the care of our patients.”

KIM and UKeiG Information Manager of the Year 2019 Call for Nominations

The winner of the 2018 Information Manager of the Year Award 2018 winner was Virginia Power, BSc. (Hons), MSc., M.Ed. PGCE, FHEA. She is a Lecturer and PhD student in Information Science and Management at UWE Bristol (University of West England). Virginia has been an information specialist for over thirty-five years working in a variety of library and information services settings including schools, FE, HE and the public sector. She has also been an advisor and consultant with Jisc. She has an interest in open educational resources, metadata, digitisation and preservation.
