Generative AI and Retrieval Augmented Generation for librarians, information and knowledge professionals - UKeiG half day online course - Thursday 27th November 2025

Posted By Administration, 21 October 2025

UKeiG is pleased to announce a repeat of its popular half-day online CPD AI course ‘Generative AI and Retrieval Augmented Generation for librarians, information and knowledge professionals’ between 1 pm and 4 pm on Thursday 27th November 2025.

Book now: https://www.cilip.org.uk/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=2002889&group=201314

Overview

Generative AI chatbots are not search engines but they are changing search expectations.

Since the launch in 2022 of OpenAI's Large Language Model (LLM) chatbot ChatGPT user information behaviour has begun to change with significant implications for the library, information and knowledge profession.

Generative AI has arguably made finding and using information easier, but its reliability is questionable. There are many ethical issues around its training and its wider social and environmental impact.

Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) offers to partly address these issues by enabling the integration of AI technology with a responsibly curated collection of relevant content to increase the reliability of its outputs.

This course will introduce you to the potential of RAG, as well as to definitions of AI literacy that are central to promoting responsible use.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for any library, information and knowledge professional interested in developing an understanding of Generative AI as it applies to their work.

It complements UKeiG’s course ‘Artificial intelligence for librarians, information and knowledge professionals’.

Course outline and learning outcomes

Participants will gain an understanding of:

Ø  The nature and impact of Generative AI

Ø  Defining Generative AI literacy

Ø  Large Language Models (LLMs) and how to enhance and augment them by creating a customised knowledge base

Ø  Training a Large Language Model using a scholarly dataset.

The course introduces you to:

Ø  Generative AI: a short history

Ø  LLMs: how they work

Ø  Generative AI and information literacy

Ø  Generative AI: building your own RAG system

The course will enable a lively and interactive environment in which participants can share their views and experiences and shape the direction of the discussion. It will also include a deep dive into the technology that is understandable to the non-coding professional and actionable for those with more technical skills.

Speakers

Andrew Cox is a senior lecturer at the Information School, University of Sheffield, and author of his independently researched report - ‘The Impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession’ - published by CILIP in 2020. It called for a ‘joined up and coherent response from information professionals, enabling us to maximise the benefits of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics for information users while mitigating the emerging risks.' He is convenor of the IFLA special interest group on AI and the chair elect of the ASIS&T SIG on AI.

Suvodeep Mazumdar is a senior Lecturer in the Information School at the University of Sheffield. His primary research interest is Big Data Analytics and Crowdsourcing. He conducts inter-disciplinary research on highly engaging, interactive and visual mechanisms in conjunction with complex querying techniques for seamless navigation, exploration and understanding of complex datasets and has applied his research in various application domains (such as health informatics, smart cities, emergency response etc.)

The course (including presentation slides and documentation) costs:

Ø  UKeiG/CILIP members £50 + VAT

Ø  Non-members £80 + VAT

Understanding Resource Discovery: Archives and Primary Sources Content online seminar

11th & 12th November – online

Understanding Resource Discovery: Archives and Primary Sources Content is a new seminar that aims to expand participants’ knowledge and understanding of the challenges of a successful discovery experience related to specific content types.

This seminar is the first of what we hope will be a series of online seminars exploring the particularities and challenges of discovery with different kinds of content types by their format or business models. This seminar will take place over two half days on Tuesday 11th November and Wednesday 12th November.  For more details visit the website here.

With increasing pressure on budgets, libraries must justify investments and enhance user experience, while publishers need insight into how data informs collection development. This two half-day event will cover advances in standardisation (COUNTER), challenges in demonstrating value, and future approaches to analytics and development in open access. Speakers will share examples of using data to support resource decisions and communicate impact to stakeholders.

Ideal for professionals responsible for collecting, analysing and making recommendations based on usage data, whether in a library setting or within a publishing organisation. For more details visit the website here.

Upcoming events - dates for your diary!

The UK electronic information Group (UKeiG) is pleased to announce a repeat of its popular half-day online CPD course ‘YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and beyond: video marketing for libraries and cultural organisations’ onThursday 13th November 2025, 10 am to 1 pm.

Book here: https://www.cilip.org.uk/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1993740&group=201314

Overview

Video is everywhere and becoming increasingly essential to successful library marketing. Instagram has shifted to become primarily a video-based platform, TikTok is huge, Facebook posts with videos get 50% more engagement than those without, and of course YouTube remains the third biggest site on the internet. This hands-on workshop aims to help delegates navigate this landscape, familiarising you with several styles of video, and giving you a chance to try out some useful tools.

Who should attend?

All librarians, IT and information professionals who publicise and promote services on behalf of their institution, and who want to market their resources and services more strategically, efficiently and effectively using video.

Topics covered include:

Ø  Vertical video: Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts

Ø  Creating and maintaining a library YouTube channel, accessibility, thumbnails, tags and descriptions, as well as using analytics to learn what your users respond best to

Ø  Exploring examples of, and discussing how best to create Virtual Tours, Explainers, Pop Culture Pastiches and Study-With-Me videos

Ø  Using PowerPoint for screen-capture and other video types

Ø  AI in video: is it worth it, and what tools can be used for free.

Delegates will have the opportunity to try out freely available video-creation apps. There will be time to experiment with:

Ø  PowToon, a hugely versatile tool which allows you to create everything from fun cartoon style animations to slick explainers to full tour videos

Ø  The free version of Adobe Cloud Express (formerly Adobe Spark) which can create videos suitable for YouTube or Instagram, as well as various other marketing outputs like graphics and flyers

Ø  invideo, an AI tool that allows you to create videos from text prompts.

Please be assured that you won't need a camera or a mic for this session. Although you will be welcome to use them; this course will explore camera-free ways to create video.

Course leader

Ned Potter is Faculty Engagement Manager at the University of York, and a trainer for various organisations including the Bodleian Libraries, the NHS and the Welsh and Irish Governments. He has run library workshops across four continents, and his presentations have been viewed over 2.5 million times online.

His book The Library Marketing Toolkit was published by Facet in 2012. Ned can be found online at ned-potter.com and on Bluesky at @nedpotter.bsky.social
