What is the Small Grants Fund (SGF)?
A fund designated to helping members of the CILIP East Member Network undertake continued professional development activities which, as well as benefiting the applicant, also support/benefit at least one of the following:
- Other members of CILIP East Members Network
- Library and Information Services in the East of England region (i.e. within Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk)
- The wider Library and Information profession
The SGF is maintained by the CILIP East Members Network Committee.
What can I apply for?
Anything that falls within the scope of the SGF as described above. Examples include:
- conference/training fees
- travel and accommodation expenses incurred in undertaking CPD activities
- cost of dependent care to allow you to undertake CPD activities
- funding to organise an event
- funding to conduct a workplace research project
Retrospective applications for funding towards the cost of past events or projects will not be considered.
Due to the limited amount of funds available, we can only award one grant per year to one student towards the costs of studying an LIS degree course. Applications for this student bursary open in early September.
All expenses you intend to claim must fall within the scope of CILIP’s Expenses Policy. Please ensure you have read and understood the policy before submitting your application.
Who is eligible to apply?
You must be a current member of the CILIP East Member Network to apply.
Applications from groups not directly connected to CILIP will be considered if the event or project falls within the scope of the SGF as defined above.
How much can I/we apply for?
In 2019 the total value of the Small Grants Fund is £1,500.
Individuals can apply for grants up to £200 or less in 2020.
Where multiple applications are received for the same course, event or activity, the number of applications approved and the individual amounts awarded will depend on the merits of each application and the total amount of funding available within the SGF at the time of application.
Groups and organisations can apply for grants up to £500 or less in 2020.
The final amount of any grant awarded to a group or organisation will be decided by the SGF Working Group depending on the size and merits of the application and the total amount of funding available in the SGF at the time of application.

Please complete the application form available to download from this webpage. Please ensure you answer all of the questions as fully as possible and email your completed application to Treasurer.EOFE@cilip.org.uk (please use the subject line ‘SGF application’).
How many times can I apply?
Multiple applications up to the individual and group limits stated above will be considered but preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding in 2019.
Who decides whether my application is successful?
All applications will be assessed by the Small grants fund and Student's Bursary Working Group which comprises three members of the CILIP East Committee, including the Treasurer. Where a majority decision cannot be reached the application will be referred to the wider CILIP East Committee and the decision will be reached by a majority vote.
Once your application has been received, we aim to reach a decision and notify you by email within 10 working days. All decisions are final. If your application is unsuccessful you will be notified of the reasons why.
Applications may be turned down where it is considered appropriate that the funding should come from another source, e.g. employer, other CILIP grants and bursaries, CILIP’s Member Networks Central Fund, etc.
If my application is successful how will the grant be paid?
We will ask you to complete and submit an expenses claim form along with proof of payment. Once this is received we will aim to reimburse you within 10 working days.
All expenses claimed must fall within the scope of CILIP Expenses Policy. Please ensure you have read and understood the policy before submitting your completed expenses claim form.
Two bursaries of up to £500 are available from CILIP East Member Network towards the payment or part-payment of course fees for undergraduate or postgraduate information/library studies courses undertaken at a UK University. This bursary is limited to UK courses that have CILIP accreditation.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must be members of CILIP East Member Network and must have already applied for a place on a relevant course; either distance learning or residential.
Priority may be given to those who are self-funding students and not in receipt of funding elsewhere. The bursary is not open to student who have received it previously.
Retrospective applications for funding towards the cost of a past qualification will not be considered.
Please note that funding of successful applications is conditional. Proof of acceptance onto a UK CILIP accredited course is required to secure the funding.

Do I have to do anything in return for the funding or bursary?
Recipients will usually be asked to share their learning or the outputs of their project with other members of the CILIP East Member Network, for example by writing an article for Sunrise
