In line with other CILIP special interest groups, GIG is governed by a committee that
consists of four officers and up to an additional 12 members.
The Group organises professional training for its members on topical subjects such as freedom of information, mentoring, electronic publishing and information handling. It promotes CILIP’s chartership and fellowships in government
departments and encourages the use by members and their organisations of the Continuing Professional Development Personal Profile.
Visits are arranged to government libraries and other national collections. As part of its policy of fostering contacts between members, the Group organises social activities.
GIG is represented on a number of other professional bodies, including SCOOP, the Branches and Groups Forum, and the Special Libraries Committee and regularly comments on CILIP's policies and initiatives.
The Government Information Group was previously called the Government Libraries and Information Group; the name was changed in 2010 following a consultation with group members.
