Excellence in Prison Libraries Award 2019

   GUIDANCE FOR APPLICANTS

The Excellence in Prison Libraries award is an award acknowledging best practice in prison libraries.  The award is made for a single, original project, initiative or example of best practice, large or small that has had a lasting impact on both the prison library service and the wider prison community. This could be a creative project, a new service initiative or a collaborative activity with an external or prison partner.

Any library project or initiative can be entered for the award. It can be an ongoing initiative or a time limited project that has had impact in 2018. It must, however, be original – nationally recognised projects such as Reading Ahead, Story Book Dads etc. are not eligible.

A panel of judges will assess:

  • How the project has impacted on the library service and the wider prison community, and how this impact has been measured
  • How the library has engaged with relevant partners (internal or external) to deliver the project
  • How the project has added value to the library service
  • What are the outcomes for library users?
  • What challenges the library faced in delivering this project and how these were overcome.
  • What the legacy of the project is – how has it influenced future planning?

Have there been any learning outcomes for library staff?
