Working with Teenagers in Public Libraries
A CILIP Training Session for Staff Working in Public Libraries

This session will increase delegates’ confidence in engaging with teenagers by helping them to understand teenager behaviour. It will also look at scenarios and good practice examples from across different library authorities and give delegates ideas for engaging in positive ways.
Course Level
This session is suitable for staff at all levels who are interested in increasing their understanding of ways of working with teenagers.

Trainer: Jennifer Horan, Community Librarian, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture

Jennifer is a public librarian based in central Scotland, responsible for four branch libraries and 20 members of staff. She was previously a school librarian for ten years, during which time she completed an MPhil in children’s literature. Before completing her Librarianship degree she trained to be a primary school teacher.
She is currently Chair of the CILIP UK Youth Libraries Group and past Chair of judges for the Yoto Carnegie Medals, and has written extensively about children’s library services and literature. She often chairs children’s and YA author events at book festivals including the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Lancaster Lit Fest. She is also a regular contributor on the subject of children’s literature on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.
Jennifer is a guest lecturer on the Library and Information Science MSc course at City, University of London, where she leads the Information Management module.
