GLL Training for Public Library Staff in 2024


Specialist skills and knowledge training for public library staff

CILIP are presenting a series of online training sessions for GLL library staff in 2024.

There are ten sessions in 2024 and they take place once a month throughout the year from March to December (excluding August). There are two sessions in September

They will be be held as live online events using Zoom on Tuesday mornings from 10am-1pm.

 

Managing Difficult Situations in Public Libraries
19 March 2024
10am-1pm
Trainer: Ash Charlton
Public library staff work to maintain an enjoyable library space while sometimes dealing with challenging and disruptive behaviour. It is hard to keep other library users feeling safe and happy when some people behave this.In this session delegates will learn how to set the scene to minimise problems and defuse difficult situations. The session will cover conflict-free communication and consider how to manage strong emotion and threats.

Three Briefings for Public Library Staff

Broaden your knowledge and understanding of some current public library issues and find out more about becoming a registered professional. Delegates can attend all three briefings across the morning or those that are of interest and/or relevant to their work and situation.

An introduction to the Practical Guide and Resources

Come Rain or Shine: Preparing public libraries for the
future in an age of uncertainty
An introduction to the report and toolkit and a hands-on opportunity to try out horizon scanning, plus a brief discussion of the links to the Sanderson Review of English Public Libraries.

An introduction to CILIP's Certification, Chartership and Fellowship

Working with Teenagers
7 May 2024

Trainer: Jennifer Horan

This session will increase delegates’ confidence in engaging with teenagers by helping them to understand teenager behaviour. It will also look at scenarios and good practice examples from across different library authorities and give delegates ideas for engaging in positive ways.

Artificial Intelligence and Public Libraries

This session will enable delegates to engage more confidently with artificial intelligence (AI) as an important topic of public debate and an increasingly important dimension of how people search for and use information. As well as providing an introduction to what AI is, the session will consider the uses and potential uses of AI in public libraries now and in the near future.

Hello, Is this the Read You're Looking For?

How can we help our readers find their next favourite read? And how can public library staff take a role in expanding reading horizons? This session will address these questions by examining how to focus on the reader rather than the book when talking with readers and understanding our own and customers’ reading preferences and prejudices.

Creative Approaches to Mental Health
in Public Libraries

This session will introduce delegates to the concept of Creative Health and the important role libraries can play in supporting communities' health and wellbeing. Delegates will learn about the varied services libraries can offer, including the trainer's Creative Health project in Wandsworth: CathARTism.

Enquiry Skills and an Introduction to Dewey for Public Library Staff

A key role for public library staff is to provide assistance to customers in finding what they are looking for. This session covers two areas. The first part explains the process behind enquiry work to find the best outcome for customers. The second part of the session is an introduction to classification: what is Dewey and what do those series of numbers mean?

Engaging with Primary School Children in Public Libraries

This session looks at public library services for primary school children. Delegates will learn about the importance of supporting learning, developing children’s library skills and encouraging reading for pleasure. The session will provide information and practical tips on hosting classroom visits and engaging effectively with children in public libraries.

From Data to Delivery: Using Public Library Statistics

This session examines how to use data to deliver more effective library services. It will look at what data sources are available, what issues to consider when collecting data and how to analyse it. Using examples from public library services, this session will give insight and ideas to deliver events and activities and develop services that can provide impact and benefit library customers.

Creating a positive customer experience

Public library staff work to create a welcoming library space where customers have a positive experience. In this session delegates will learn how to create the ideal environment for a really good customer experience in your library, in terms of surroundings and how people are treated.

How to register

Once registration is available for the session(s) you want to attend, click on the 'Book Now' button. Complete the online registration form. You need to fill in a registration form for each session. You don't need to be a CILIP member or sign in to the website to book and there is no fee. Once you've completed the form, submit it and you will receive an email that you've registered.

How to join the session

About a week before the session, you'll get an email with details about how to join the session, including the Zoom meeting link. On the day, open Zoom and use the Zoom meeting details to join the training session.

Certificate of completion

After you've attended a session, we'll send you a personalised certificate of completion and a link to complete a feedback form. After a couple of months we'll contact you to ask for your feedback on the impact and application of the training to your work.
