Carnegie Leadership Further Information and FAQs

Further Information and FAQs

To be more effective as a leader we need to know ourselves. We need to be open to understanding why we do things and how what we say and do affects other people. This course encourages us to reflect on our behaviours and to consider what is helping us to be effective and what might be hindering us.

It has been adapted from the Library Lab programme to be a self-directed journey for anyone who wants to invest in their own development.

It is not a “how to” manual. It does not advocate any single style of leadership. It asks you to consider the nature of leadership and encourages you to develop your own principles for how you want to lead.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions that will help you decide if this course meets your needs.

There is no deadline or cut-off point. You can follow the programme at your own pace. Each module takes about 90 minutes to read the material, watch the videos etc. At each stage you will be asked to reflect on the ideas and concepts in the module. This is actually the most important part. Taking the time to reflect on things and discussing them with other people will help to deepen your understanding and clarify what actions you want to take.

This is not a formal programme. It does not lead to a qualification or certificate. It is a self-directed journey of discovery, helping you to understand yourself better and increasing your awareness of how organisations work. It could lead you to think about taking a formal course that leads to a qualification in the future.

Make dedicated time for the modules (about 60 minutes each)
  • Make time to reflect on the ideas and concepts in the module
  • Keep a learning log of your thoughts and the actions you want to take. Each module will prompt you to reflect on things from your own experience. If you keep a note of these you will already be creating your own development plan. You can use the downloadable Stepping Into Leadership Course Workbook to do this, or create your own.
  • Find someone to talk to about the ideas. This could be a colleague, your manager or someone outside your work environment who has some understanding of what you are aiming to achieve by doing this course.
  • Use your reflections in your workplace appraisal or performance management sessions. What are you learning about yourself? What opportunities might there be to apply your learning in a work situation or project?
  • Remind yourself frequently that you are investing this time for your own development and that you are worth it!

Who were the Carnegie Learning Lab Partners? CLL Partners were selected in a competitive process to lead an innovative project in their service and to follow an online learning programme. That programme has now been adapted for wider use as a legacy of Library Lab. There were three cohorts of Partners between 2014 and 2019.
