Stepping into Leadership
4. Creativity and Innovation
4.1 Introduction
This module is about innovation and creativity. Like all skills, creativity and innovation need continuous nurturing and application if they are to become part of our instinctive approach to developing our services.
The module consists of 5 pages of content. Use the "Continue the course" links at the bottom of each page to work through the pages in order. To choose another module use the buttons at the bottom of the page.
Creativity
The first topic of this module looks at creativity and how we can develop this in ourselves and encourage it in others. It is based on the belief that all of us are capable of creativity and that we can be more creative in all aspects of our life
and work.
Creative Thinking
The second topic focuses on creative thinking and thinking tools that will be helpful in the initial stages of innovation.
Innovation
In organisational terms, creativity, on its own, is only a starting point. The third topic deals with the process of innovation, treating it as a discipline, a systematic practice.
Innovation with others
If organisations are to be innovative they need leaders who are committed to innovation. As we know, leaders and leadership can be at all levels in an organisation - not just at the top. This topic identifies things that leaders can do to nurture
and embed a culture of innovation.
Getting the most from the learning
As you work through each topic you will be asked to stop and think about certain things.
Please do not skip these stages!
It is advisable to use the Stepping Into Leadership Course Workbook or have a notebook where you can capture all your thoughts on the programme.
When you are asked to write things down, please do this.
Recording your thoughts and ideas is an important aspect of the learning process.
Each topic will take between 45 and 60 minutes to complete. It is best to do each part in sequence and on its own, perhaps one a week, and have a quick review of previous topics before starting the next one.
It is best to set aside a dedicated time to do this when you will not be interrupted. Easier said than done? Don't regard your leadership development as an optional luxury - it's essential, and you deserve it!
