Carnegie Leadership 2_1 Why?

Stepping into Leadership

2. Why?

2.1 Introduction

This module focuses on the importance of knowing WHY we do what we do, and the challenge of how to articulate this to others.

The module consists of 3 pages of content. Use the "Continue the course" links at the bottom of each page to work through the pages in order. To choose another module use the buttons at the bottom of the page.

All the subsequent modules refer back to this fundamental aspect of purpose and identity.

When asked about the work of library and information services we tend to list the things that happen in the services, like:

"we provide access to information sources and materials”

“ we help people to use the internet”

“we encourage children to read for pleasure”

These are examples of WHAT we do – and the list is endless.

The WHAT – and, for that matter, the HOW – are important, but unless we know what drives us and others to do what we do and how we do it, the outside world will not understand the fundamental reason behind our work and its importance.

This module draws on the thinking of Simon Sinek. Described as a modern leadership guru, Sinek’s innovative views have provoked businesses and public services to question their organisational cultures and he challenges all of us to be better leaders.
