Stepping into Leadership
6.3 Other sources of development opportunities
There are many ways in which you can continue your development. Here are some suggestions:
CILIP
CILIP is the UK’s library and information association. CILIP works to improve services, develop our members’ expertise and champion the sector. CILIP supports workforce development through:
If you are not a member, you can find out more about our Member Benefits and join online here.
Libraries Connected
Libraries Connected represents the public library sector and provides Training and Resources, events and conferences that can be accessed by public
library services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Opportunities within your organisation
Many organisations have programmes – usually designed for the whole organisation (not just people in library and information services). Ask your manager and colleagues about how to access these.
External courses in leadership and management
If you want to follow a formal learning programme there are many opportunities to do so – too many to list here – and range from short courses to fully accredited diplomas and degrees.
- Colleges and universities are likely to offer programmes – if there isn’t one close to you, others may offer distance learning.
- Commercial training companies offer short and long courses, but are likely to involve considerable costs.
Self-directed learning
You could:
- Follow up on topics and leadership thinkers from this course – there is a wealth of resources available online – some are free but, increasingly, they come with charges
- Follow courses, like this one, from CILIP or Libraries Connected.
- Read books on leadership or specific aspects of it – the literature is extensive!
- Team up with colleagues to create a discussion or action learning group
We hope that this course has encouraged you to believe that you are a leader and that you will use it as a springboard to continue your development.
Good luck!
