Leading Libraries Series: Leading for Inclusion

The Leading for Inclusion set consists of the following modules:

You are in the Inclusion and inclusive leadership module

Inclusion and leadership

The big idea: Inclusion as a leadership capability

“Inclusive leadership means having the courage to take conscious steps to break down barriers for people at risk of being excluded from society.”

Inclusive Leadership Theoretical Framework, Page 5. https://inclusiveleadership.eu/the-inclusive-leadership-handbook-theoretical-framework/

In a diverse and ever changing world, where the voice of the people has been more prominent than ever before, leaders need to develop the skills and capabilities to understand, work with and celebrate difference. By doing so they will create environments in which people from all backgrounds feel valued and have access to opportunities they deserve, and can therefore flourish and thrive. Inclusive environments mean that service users, staff and citizens feel valued and better understood, as performance and innovation within teams and services improve. Inclusion of all people benefits society, organisations and humanity as a whole.

Inclusive Leaders work effectively to bring people together in new spaces where differences can be explored and understood. They understand this process can be uncomfortable or make people feel vulnerable, however they have the courage, compassion and skill needed to engage in dialogue that moves people and teams into transformative spaces.

‘Inclusion’ goes beyond the tick box or policy mindset. Inclusive leaders recognise the nature and impact of their own identity, power and privilege, and how they can work with it to create a level playing field for all people in society. Inclusive leaders take time and care to better understand the lived experiences of people they lead, and are aware of how power and privilege is distributed in teams and systems in order to address imbalances.

Starting with yourself - your own relationship with 'inclusion'

In this 'Leading for Inclusion' series, you will explore different concepts and frameworks that will enable you to develop your understanding of inclusion and inequalities, in order to develop your own inclusive leadership practice.

This module will focus on your identity as a leader and how you feel about approaching conversations about inclusion. This will help you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your felt responses to issues around difference and diversity, and what you need to consider as you engage in dialogue with others.

In the following segments, we will draw your attention to three different elements of your leadership:

  • The importance of talking about inclusion and the quality of those conversations
  • Your understanding of yourself in relation to these issues and your felt response to inclusion
  • Your lived experience and what this means for how you lead.
