Leading Libraries Series: Leading for Resilience

Introduction

How resilient are you?: Creating a new habit

As you work through the modules:

  • Identify a good habit you want to begin or an unwanted habit you would like to change
  • Identify a daily ‘cue‘ that will remind you to do the habit
  • Specify (in detail) the new behaviour you want to practice
  • Decide on a suitable reward for performing the habit
  • Begin!

Designing your new habit

Remember it is best to make sure you do your new habit daily and it should take less than 5 minutes to start with.

You can download the form based on the content below to design your new habit from the 'Additional resources' section (coming up next). Make sure you keep it somewhere in sight on your phone or in your home to remind you of the details.

Implementation intentions

First you need a simple sentence to summarise your commitment to your new habit.

Intentions should take one of the forms below:

I will [BEHAVIOUR] at [TIME] in [LOCATION] or

After I [EXISTING HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].

Four laws

Then use the headings below to think about how you might use the 'Four Laws' to help you make the habit stick:

  • Make it OBVIOUS
  • Make it ATTRACTIVE
  • MAKE it EASY
  • MAKE it SATISFYING
