Walford Award
The Walford Award pays tribute to Dr. John Walford (1907–2000), a distinguished librarian, researcher, and writer. Dr. Walford is best known for his seminal work, Walford’s Guide to Reference Material, first published in 1959. This comprehensive guide critically evaluated reference materials across various disciplines, offering detailed insights into their scope and quality. By its fifth edition in 1989, the guide had expanded into three volumes, with the final edition released in 2007. For decades, it was considered an essential resource for librarians and researchers revising their collections, with many relying on "Walford" as the definitive authority.
Established in 1991, the Walford Award celebrates those who follow in his footsteps as pioneers and innovators in information and knowledge management. Its recipients are a diverse group—some are prominent figures in the profession, while others are unsung heroes working diligently behind the scenes. What unites them is their exceptional contribution to how we organize, preserve, and share human knowledge.
The Walford Award was originally awarded by the Information Services Group (CILIP's ISG SIG) until ISG's merge into the K&IM SIG in 2017.
