Health librarians and knowledge specialists help to inform a million decisions a day across health care.
Every day across the healthcare sector in England more than a million decisions are made that have a profound and lasting impact on people's lives and which influence the quality of healthcare and the cost of services.
A Million Decisions is an ongoing initiative jointly-led by CILIP Health Libraries Group and Health Education England supported by CILIP. It calls for all decisions in the healthcare sector to be fully evidence-based, and for government and health service providers to employ and make use of the expertise of librarians and knowledge specialists in meeting their obligations under The Health and Social Care Act 2012.
A Million Decisions was launched at the All Parliamentary Party Group for Libraries in 2016. A social media campaign followed and conversations held with senior leaders at key health events. It aimed to:
Demonstrate and promote the skills, role and positive impact of health librarians and knowledge specialists in supporting key health agendas
Recruit key advocates from the health sector who will be influential champions
Secure a change in senior management practice in utilising the expertise of specialist librarians to inform evidence-based care
Secure above the line investment in health librarians and knowledge specialist skills and creation of quality jobs as a result
Create advocacy materials which can be used by all health librarians and knowledge specialists
Develop CILIP’s understanding of the complex and shifting nature of the Health Service eco-system in England
A Million Decisions has been successful to date by:
Expressing a common purpose that all librarians and knowledge specialists can get behind.
Articulating to employers that the role of health librarians and knowledge specialists is business critical
Opening doors to senior decision makers
Raising the profile of health librarians and knowledge specialists
Take a look at our impact
Librarians and knowledge specialists have a real impact on the cost and quality of healthcare services, working with clinicians, service managers and those commissioning healthcare services.
They ensure that decisions are based upon the best available evidence and encourage knowledge to be shared, captured and re-used to continually improve healthcare outcomes.
Every day health librarians and knowledge specialists add real value across the NHS and healthcare sector #amilliondecisions.
