Mental resilience

Resource list

Dealing with stress and anxiety

Pocket has a simple article with tips to help you break the rumination cycle – 4 habits that will train your brain to stop worrying.

A great longer video on neuroplasticity (the way the brain changes) Rewiring the Anxious Brain from Therapy in a Nutshell

Nick Petrie, an organisation consultant who works in the field of adult development, has also created some great resources about stress and resilience – How to separate pressure from stress. You can click through to read his ‘white paper’ - PRESSURE IS NOT STRESS - 4 Steps to be Resilient in Disruptive Times.

Shifting negative thinking patterns

The very entertaining animation ‘Automatic Thoughts’ from Watchwellcast describes how the negative thinking process affects us and gives an excellent process for decoding them – the ‘Record – Rationalise – Replace’ process.

If you want a more provocative and amusing take on how to detach from negative moods, try ‘How to best manage your moods’ from the excellent School of Life.

If you find yourself in a negative thinking spiral about a recent event, you can also try completing this decatastrophising worksheet from Therapistaid. The worksheet is a well-validated tool for ‘getting realistic’ about our negative thought spirals.

Here is a great short animated video about cognitive distortions and how to deal with them from the well being educators, ThriveUnion

Any of the useful articles on the Positive Psychology website, especially the resources under the cognitive restructuring heading.

Focussing your attention

Stephen Covey’s idea of 'Zones of Attention' is described in this simple video from ProAction Development, a community interest company working in the field of organisational development.

There is also a helpful article ‘Refocus on your circle of control’ from the development writer, Nick Petrie.
