February 2020: AGM News - New Name and New Committee Members

At the AGM on the 31st of January, after consulation with members and with CILIP, we unveiled a new name and logo for the group, rebranding from the Publicity and Public Relations Group (PPRG) to the Marketing and Communications Group (MCG). Although our title has changed, our remit remains the same: to promote marketing excellence in libraries.

We are also delighted to welcome two new members to the MCG committee, Sheldon Korpet and Kamila Brown, both of who were elected and confirmed at the AGM on the 31st of July. Sheldon has been elected Secretary of the Committee and takes up her new responsibilities with immediate effect.

January 2020: Davina is stepping down

Davina Omar, Chairwoman of the PPRG will be stepping down after many years in the post. Full details will be announced at the AGM, which will form part of the PPRG Marketing Excellence Conference 2020 taking place at Aston University on the 31st of January.

Both Chair and Secretary posts will be nominated and voted in at the AGM and so far we have had the below nominations.

Davina Omar (current chair who is stepping down from this position) has been nominated for Secretary
Luke Fowler (current secretary) has been nominated for Chair



November 2019: Booking now open for the PPRG Marketing Excellence Conference 2020

If you're interested in marketing and communications in libraries and information environments then you're warmly invited to attend the Publicity & Public Relations Group Annual Conference. The day includes a keynote speech from Rachel Van Riel, founder and Director of Opening the Book as well as presentations from the PPRG Marketing Excellence Award winners. It's a great opportunity to share experiences and there's always something to learn from the award winners and other participants. Hosted at Aston University, lunch will be at Conference Aston. September 2019 CILIP PPRG Marketing Excellence Award Winners 2019 Announced

CILIP’s Publicity and Public Relations Group (PPRG) are delighted to announce the winners of the Marketing Excellence Awards 2019. The Awards recognise and celebrate successful marketing and promotional campaigns from libraries of all sizes and sectors across the country.

This year we have three award winners:

Shetland Libraries for “eServices on the Up!": Shetland’s entry showcased the usefulness of local knowledge when it comes to marketing activity. The range of activities they undertook to promote their digital services to residents in a geographically diverse area showed that staff considered their goals and how best to achieve them in a challenging environment.

Solihull Libraries for “They made it happen! Solihull's self-build revolution”: Solihull showed that libraries can directly support and impact local communities, via their campaign “They made it happen! Solihull’s self-build revolution”. Excellent use of non-financial resources and evidence of impact on local decision-making marked this entry for an award.

Staffordshire Libraries for “Burton Bedtime Stories”: Staffordshire’s “Burton Bedtime Stories” are short films of local people reading picture books, which are shown on social media in ‘series’. This successful campaign shows the power of using social media channels to reach new audiences when you have limited or no budget.

The judging committee were once again pleased by the range and variety of entries. Davina Omar, Chair of PPRG said:

“PPRG received a wonderful range of entries to the Marketing Excellence Awards this year and it was a real pleasure for the committee to read all about the exciting work taking place in our profession. The three award winners showcase this excellent work and we look forward to sharing their success with you all at the conference in January 2020.”

The awards will be presented at the annual PPRG Conference, held at Aston University on Friday 31st January 2020. Bookings for the event will open later this year.

July 4 2019: PPRG at the CILIP Conference 2019

We had a great time at the CILIP Conference in Manchester. The PPRG stand was conveniently placed near the lunch counters and we received a lot of traffic from passers by. After months of corresponding by email, we also got to meet our bursary winner, Sheldon Korpet. Congratulations again, Sheldon.

About the Awards

We are pleased to launch the 2019 Marketing Excellence Awards.

If you or your library team ran a campaign in 2018 to market all or part of your service, now is your time to shout about it! Submit your entry to CILIP’s annual Marketing Excellence Awards and be rewarded for your hard work.

The Awards are open to any library of any size in any sector across the UK. You will be judged on your campaign’s impact, effectiveness and creativity, not your budget. From stock promotions to storytelling projects, new online services to the launch of major new library buildings, the Marketing Excellence Awards exist to celebrate achievement at any scale.

Why enter?

The Marketing Excellence Awards celebrate successful library marketing and promotional campaigns across the country. They offer national exposure for your project and communicate the value of what you're doing among funders, partners, media, peers, managers and customers. 

You've done the hard work, delivering your project. Now win some extra recognition!

Entries are judged by the PPRG Committee, one of CILIP’s Special Interest Groups. Additional judges with relevant expertise will be invited to join us, to provide external validation.
Judging will be against the following criteria:

  • Success in meeting the original aims and objectives of the campaign
  • Suitability of concept to target market
  • Quality of graphics, design and copywriting (where appropriate)
  • Range, effectiveness and appropriateness of the marketing communications used
  • Timing, message and consistency of marketing communications
  • Evaluation of the campaign, demonstrating evidence of impact on the community or target audience (e.g. customer interaction, feedback, attendance, media coverage)
  • Effective use of project budget and non-financial resources

 The originality of the concept will also be taken into account for the overall rating.



  • Any library service of any size in any sector within the UK is eligible to enter a project to the Marketing Excellence Awards.
  • You may submit multiple entries.
  • Entrants do not need to be PPRG group members.
  • Entries must cover activity that broadly took place during 2018, and evaluation should have been completed before end of May 2019.
  • To be considered eligible, the campaign or promotion should not endorse activity that is in conflict with CILIP’s policy against the substitution of paid professional staff by volunteers



Awards will be presented at the Marketing and Communications Group annual conference in January 2020, and winners will be invited to present their campaigns.

How to enter

Submissions should be no more than six sides of A4, demonstrating how you meet the judging criteria in the most appropriate way for your campaign. We strongly suggest you clearly address each of the criteria in order for the judging panel to assess your submission to the full extent.

Illustrative examples of artwork, social media posts etc can be provided in a separate file as an appendix (no page limit).

In your entry please include:

  • Named contact for entry and contact details (email and phone)
  • Organisation name 
  • Title of entry
  • Abstract for entry (including details of target group)
  • Relevant time period for marketing campaign
  • Any relevant web addresses

Deadline for submissions is 5pm on Monday 10th June, 2019.

May 3, 2019: Bursaries: CILIP Conference 2019

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the bursary place for CILIP Conference 2019 is: Sheldon Korpet

We were thoroughly impressed by Sheldon's application "Innovative Marketing Plan for Sheffield Children's Central Library" which outlined a marketing campaign to boost childhood literacy and promote library services in collaboration with commercial booksellers.

Congratulations Sheldon.

Sheldon currently works as an Information Officer and Capacity Management Assistant (both at The University of Sheffield). She recently joined Sheffield Central Library as a Code Club Volunteer and tweets @SheldonKorpet. She is a qualified Librarian and completed her MSc in Digital Library Management from the University of Sheffield in 2017.

Thank you to all the other applications who entered for a bursary place. There is still time to take advantage of the Early Bird Discount (ending 17 May) so that you can also experience the range of expert-led seminars and workshops. Remember to log in to the CILIP website before booking so that it recognises your membership status and offers you the correct delegate rate.

The 2019 conference promises to be another informative affair and will encourage discussion, knowledge sharing and cross-sectoral learning, and provide delegates with the practical skills and knowledge to positively influence the future.
