This was a joint event with CILIP NW Branch and CILIP PPRG.
Have you ever said "I’m rubbish at design"? If so, this interactive workshop is for you!
The workshop gave attendees a basic grounding in some of the underlying principles behind copywriting and graphic design, so that they can produce fantastic copy.
By the end of the day attendees had a good understanding of:
- What is copywriting and why it’s important in visual communications?
- What makes good copy
- Understanding and writing your brief
- The importance of space and form in design
- Text and typography
- Using colour effectively
It also provided an opportunity for attendees to share and discuss their own good practices with fellow participants.
This course is aimed at those involved in the creation of publicity or promotional materials, particularly those new to the Library and Information profession or those with an interest in visual/graphic design who want to learn the basics. If you need help getting started, this course will provide the grounding you need to get going and be confident producing more stimulating and enticing copy.

This was a joint event with CILIP South West Members Network, SWRLS and CILIP PPRG,
This course wasaimed at those involved in the creation of publicity or promotional materials, particularly those new to the Library and Information profession or those with an interest in visual/graphic design who want to learn the basics.
- Considered the importance of the design brief in order to stay ‘on message’ and ‘on target’
- Recognised the impact of the interplay between form and space
- Developed an understanding of different grid systems in guiding layout
- Examined why choice and position of typography impacts the visual message and tone
- Reflected on the choice of colour and the impact this may have on its reader
- Gained knowledge of some of the fundamental principles behind graphic design

Library and information services across public and private sectors are increasingly being pressured to provide more for less. With diminishing numbers of resources it has never been more important for those working in the sector to gain new skills and provide more value. Social media, video and creative platforms are superb ways for library and information professionals to help deliver a better, more reactive service that benefits its users. From creating your own content to empowering others to do so, this workshop aims to teach attendees core skills that will help them deliver a more sustainable, outreaching service. We will also explore platform choice, Creative Commons licences and how you achieve a sustainable way to discover new creative ways of promoting your service.
