Libraries in Wales

CILIP Cymru Wales worked with the National Library of Wales Wikimedian Jason Evans and LibrariesHacked on the creation of visual datasets of libraries in Wales. All of the data sets are openly available and editable

You can find links below to datasets showing library resources using Wikidata maps as well as downloads to a flyer promoting these resources.

Also on Wikidata is this collection of public libraries in listed buildings in Wales.

Downloadable resources

We've created flyers in Welsh and English that link to this page and the associated resources. These can be downloaded from the links below

Libraries in Wales (leaflet in English)

Llyfrgelloedd yng Nghymru (leaflet in Welsh)

If you would like to add a library on to Wikipedia- here are the instructions.

Project information- stage 1.

The data for each sector was originally collected in a spreadsheet format at the beginning of 2018. The spreadsheet listed name of branch, address, postcode, longitude and latitude, local authority/institution, website address, and telephone number if listed.

The public libraries dataset used original data provided in 2012 by the Culture Grid via data.gov.uk under an Open Government License as a basepoint.

Each local authority’s website in Wales was searched for a list of libraries and these details were then used to update the dataset. The list was then shared with members of SCL Wales who looked over and feedback further alterations.

A similar process was undertaken for each sector- WHELF, AWHILES and some FE librarians were also asked to check the final details.

The beauty of collecting data this way and making it available as Wikidata is that it can now be updated and re-purposed as needed. Any libraries that are not included- can be added.

It will be interesting to see how the data is used or built on and we hope that this will be the start of using some data as a visual tool future planning.
